Printer Problems

Help anyone!! I just recently purchased a StarMicronics Powertype Daisywheel printer and am ready to pull my hair out. The problem is that the printer does not respond in an "expected" manner when running. Let me get more specific. I pulled the parallel cable from my Gemini 10x and plugged it into the Powertype. I set preferences on my Textcraft Plus to use the Diablo_630 printer driver. I told the WP to print a full size letter out and it did. The problem is that at the top of the letter it first printed out "!)19AIQYK". Every test that I give this printer will turn out that ^ at the top of the page. I've tried many different drivers but all have some quirk to them. The closest that I can come is the 10X driver which I use normally. It's only problem is that it forces emphasize mode (I can circumvent that) and it always double spaces (can't get around that). If someone can please tell me what I'm doing wrong or which printer driver I should be using it would save me from becoming bald. I hate the idea that mdot matrix driver is running my daisywheel printer just because I am ignorant of some facts. H E L P M E P L E A S E !!!! Thanks much in advance, Jamie Severe

Jamie, I don't know exactly what your problem is, but suspect that what you are seeing at the top of the page is an initialize string that is supposed to re-set the printer. If the Gemini isn't fully Diablo compatible, then it may not understand some of the commands and will give you strange characters like that. That's a guess, the only way you could find out for sure is to take a short ASCII file (like S/startup-sequence) and copy it to PRT: twice in a row. If the first time you get the garbage, but not the second…then that's the problem. If you get it both times…then something else is wrong and if you get it neither time…then Textcraft is doing something strange. Don
