I'd be interested in reading your comments about the quality and
speed of the NEC LC-890. Are you satisfied with yours? The toner kits look
pretty economical at about $25, but how long do they last (on average) –
since that is a "white write" printer (the whole page is "black", and the
white areas are "burned away" by the LED's, the opposite of most laser type
printers). Along with that, how does fine detail hold up – and how does it
hold up after photocopies are made of the page? Do the pages come out even
in density? (that's the one bad rap I've heard about this printer –
besides being slow).

The only small negative on the LC-980 is large black areas on being even. The
2nd negative is that it does not handle enevoples very well. As far as cost,
speed and relilabilty – I give it a A+. I have a dealer who is selling them
for $3050, I paid $3595 for my first one and $3200 for the 2nd. Guess buying 2
would dsay that I like the printer.

Do you know anything about a Postscript compatible printer from TI? I just
heard about it, but little information except that it really does do
Postscript.

TI has several models of Postscript printers, from a *relatively*
inexpensive one to more expensive & faster models.
I believe they use the Ricoh engine (had/has major faults) and didn't get
good reviews in several of the DTP mags. I think they said they were slow, had
fuzzy text, and uneven printing.

Thanks for the info. I had decided I just could not justify buying one of them
at any price right now, but was curious to learn more about them.
Wonder if their fonts could be used for other Postscript printers? (Bet they
couldn't.)

Most postscript printers have about the same set of "built-in" (ROM)
fonts. Postscript downloadable "soft-fonts" should be usable on any Postscript
printer – but they *may* have done something "different" with their printers,
but I can't imagine WHY.

Thanks, Lloyd. I do not plan to purchase this printer, but I'll ask some more
questions about the fonts. They might be less expensive than some of the other
Postscript fonts are.

I did some checking after you asked abount the toner on the NEC-LC890. I get
about 3000 pages per toner refill. The PC Cartridge last about 7500 pages, but
I have found that I can remove the excess toner, and it works like new. 18,000
pages on the current PC Cartridge – and still working fine.

Thanks for the information. The NEC certainly looks like it is
inexpensive to USE.
Do you know, off hand or by testing, about how long it takes to print a
page of TEXT only, a page with TEXT & some GRAPHICS, and a heavy GRAPHICS
page? How do you have yours connected – serial or parallel?
If I ask a lot of questions, it is because I am about to take the plunge
myself. I'm deciding between the NEC and the Qume CrystalPrint Publisher.

I run using the Par: – a page of text takes about 40 sec(s) if the font has not
been used since turning on the printer. Each additional takes about 8 to 10
sec(s). I have printed 400 page manuals in about 1 hour. Simple graphics such
as boxes lines, shading etc. take very little time. ClipArt just depends on
the size – a small brush from DPaint may add 20 to 40 sec(s). I have scanned
blueprints and had them take upto 45 min(s). Hope this helps.
