#Disk errors

HELP!!!!
While d/ling a program (archived) my disk filled up, and the file did not
completly dl.
Now, I cannot delete ant files, as Mr. Amiga says my "disk not validated" so I
cannot do anything.
Help, I cannot afford to lose my files….If I copy the disk will everything be
okay…..?

Let the disk go all the way through the validation sequence, you should
then be able to delete the file that was only partially downloaded. A DiskCopy
of the disk would just reproduce the error.

I don't meen to sound ignorant, but what is the validation process, I thought
that diskdoctor doesn't help errors just remakes dirs?

The disk validator after checking a flag in the root directory, and
finding it to be "wrong" goes thru the directory and filestructure and attempts
to see if everything is "ok" or not. If it is, it validates the disk…if not,
it posts the warning. The only thing the validator will change is the "bit map
valid" flag.
DiskDoctor, on the other hand, supposedly checks the files and their
associated sectors and trys to insure that only one file claims any specific
sector on the disk…and that specific sectors that belong to a file are marked
as "in use" in the bit map. When it finds an error, it tries to fix it, not
always successfully depending on the damage.

The validation process is when the disk is whirring after insert. It is
checking to see that the bitmap is valid – that the blocks that have been used
are marked as used, and stuff like that. Sometimes that takes quite a while if
the system thinks it has found an error on the disk.
By the way – I would use DiskDoctor as a last resort. Use DiskSalv first. You
will find it in Lib 14, DISKSA.ARC. It has saved many a lost disk!

James, I would suggest that you use DiskSalv to copy over the files. The
latest version will even let you do it with query, so you just save the things
you want.
Another thing might be to just copy the good files to a formatted disk. Either
should work.
