#HAM backgrounds?

Kev, I agree that Amiga gfx needs updating (nobody would argue with that) — what I'm wondering is whether the HAM mode for backgrounds is still competitive with what's being touted as "256-color VGA graphics" (the latest games advertising hype) on the IBM. In other words, am I correct in recommending to people worried about converting 256-color IBM designs to the Amiga that they should try to use HAM for the backgrounds? Or do they simply have to reduce the number of colors on-screen in order to design a conversion, to 32 or 64 or whatever? –steve

They should try to use HAM for such conversions BUT it is more work involved than just cutting the bitplanes, look at games like Pioneer Plague, and Knights of Crystalion, both use animated HAM quite well as well as the forth coming DDT game. Ben

It seems to me The Art Department's 16-color wowie-zowie picture (see it in ASDG's Data Library) is compelling evidence for "256 colors: so what?" People should paint in 16 million colors (using whatever paint system they want) and then convert it to 16 or 32 using software from ASDG or Active Ci Circuits.

Good question, and I wonder what others say. Myself, I'd say 32 colors would work fine, unless you had really photographic backgrounds, in which case use HAM. Hmmm. Depends on storage amount taken, too?
