Hi,
I have some questions for those who own an A3000. Is it available
now? My dealer says he cant get one for several months. Is this true?
Also, how compatible is the A3000 with older software. I have a large
colection of programs and games, will they work on the A3000? Can you slow
down the A3000 to run older games? Do you have to partision your hard
dirve with separet os 1.3 and os 2.0 drives?
I am trying to decied if I should invest more money in my A2000 or
just move up to an A3000 so help with any of these questions would be of
great help.

The 3000 is certainly available now. I have had mine for about a month.
I've been using the machine with a narrow range of productivity programs
–mainly 3DPro, Silver, Terrain, Vista, CEDPro — but they all work fine.
I tested the 3000 against my game collection and the results were much less
encouraging — less than half ran.
There is no way I know of to slow the 3000 down. This does cause trouble
for some of the games that do work. Better Dead Than Alien is very
significantly sped up, for example.
The hard drive comes partitioned so you can boot either 1.3 or 2.0. You
can reformat to eliminate the 1.3 partition if you want.

Yes, the A3000 is available now, my dealer has had them available
for sale for about 3 weeks now.
Right now most software runs fine, but there are some packages ( in
particular games) that don't. However, the operating system is not
finalized yet (v2.0 of AmigaDOS). So in all likelyhood, many things that
don't run now, may well run ok when the OS is finalized completely.
No, you can't slow down the A3000. Properly written software will
handle the CPU speed properly. That is, programs that are time dependant
will be written so that the CPU speed doesn't matter.
The hard drive comes already setup so you can run either 1.3 or 2.0
based on your selection from a menu on cold bootup.
The decision to invest money is, of course, up to you.

Thanks for the info. If I do get an A3000 how do I get the student
discount. I am going to be a senior a the University of Pennsylvania. Do
I need to get a letter from them or will my student ID work. Can I get the
discount from any dealer of just from Amiga?

First, you'll need to find an authorized dealer who is working with the
educational discount. Find out Commodore's 800 number and ask them. Be sure
to request a dealer that is specific handling educational sales.
Then you'll need to get a form from the dealer, have UofPenn sign that
you are student making significant progress towards a degree. Then get a
certified check or money order and give it all back to the dealer. It then
takes about 2 weeks.
