AMIGA FILE SERVER

TO ANYBODY: I need to know if I can use an A3000 as a file server for
multiple keyboard and terminals connected to it. I.E. is a card available
to plug in that can drive other keyboard/monitors?
My actual application is a dbase being accessed by two-three different
stations, I'd like to break the Amiga into this market if I can. The only
solution I could think up was a star network, but I'd prefer a file server
with dumb terminals.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Yes…you can have multiple terminals (dumb terminals) hooked up to
the Amiga. But..remember that there is NO user-user (terminal-terminal)
protection.
However, if you want to use an A3000UX (the UNIX version)…they
yes, because it is a true multi-user system.

I am mainly concerned about acquiring sturdy LAN hardware/software. It
seems like so many people focus on the video/graphical uses they forget
about simply using the computer in other niches.
I do not have any problems with UNIX (preference), but I suppose my
next step is to visit the Amiga dealer in Dallas to see what they have up
their sleeves. And perhaps I should browse through my product guide, as
unfortunate as this sounds, a lack of quality support may doom this job to
the ms-dos world (due to known LAN hardware/software).
Thanks for the suggestion about the UX version, I'd forgotten that!

The UX comes with an ethernet adapter…and tcp/ip software is
available for it (or perhaps included…I forget exactly).
It's also my understanding (and I could be wrong on this) that NFS
is part of SVR4 so you'd be all set.

In "AC's Guide to the Amiga" I also see an Amiganet (Ethernet) product
being offered by Advanced Computer Design of West Germany that holds a lot
of promise…..
Unfortunately, the potential customer was flabbergasted he could not
just "hook up another computer and it would automatically share the
program" he was now using (which does not seem to support LAN). So the
entire thing is on hold, other than supplying him with hardware / software
requirements.
Maybe I will hear from him in a couple of months about this, but I
will certainly be in touch with him, he's my brother.
In the interim, I just want to express my appreciation to all of the
information ya'll supplied. When in doubt, just ask a question on
Compuserve, the answers will come scrolling in!

Nice to hear from you again! I'm still in Houston, but my big mouth
still keeps me running and ducking anyway……I've been wanting to come
down and see the group/activities, but 12 hours a day leaves precious
little time for my kids as is….
There was an Amazing Computer store here for a while, but it seems to
have shut down. So I prefer to try and come to Dallas to that store for my
needs.
The user group here is "hosted" by the main Amiga seller here, and
they focus on a captive "audience" for video type stuff. Not bad, IF you
are into the Amiga in that area……I think the group would do a lot
better if it cut it's strings to the computer dealer but apparently most of
them do not agree.
If I can ever free up my time I will try to change some of the focus
of the group, there are too many other things for Amigans. But you know
the saying "If you don't vote then don't complain!".
I hope everything is working out best for you and family, and the
groups meeting at Infomart!

The Amazing store here is shut down, as well. Metropolitan is still here,
and Sonya is working there. Jim Dent has opened a store called The Edge
that is said to be very large and well stocked, but I've not made it over
there yet.
Is the group you mentioned in Houston the one associated with CHUG? I was
not aware that they were sponsored by a dealership. I do know that that
dealer specializes in video.

Sorry about the long delay twixt logins……the thunderstorms over
here kind of get in the way during an unusually wet summer!
Perhaps I should've said the dealership has _too_ much influence in
the club as it meets at their place of business. This group is not the
CHUG, if I open my mouth and tell all I'll be flamed for it and I'm trying
to follow a new policy of live and let live. A lot of folks don't
understand my brand of humor, I guess being around me would show them that
I take _nothing_ seriously and then they wouldn't be offended by whatever
pops out of me. Apparently I need to try to get ahold of CHUG and see how
their meetings go…….although I have nothing against sales pitches at
meetings, when you have meetings at a vendors place you typically only get
that one particular vendors view of the world.
I am deeply disappointed that the Amazing store shut down, I had hoped
(and thought) they were doing well when I moved to Houston. Can this be
chalked up to the general _recession_ and loss of spending power we are
suffering as a nation?

I don't know the whole story about Amazing, but I understand that the
people furnishing the financing took a sizeable amount of their money out
of the business right at a time when a bank payment was due, and the bank
shut down the stores. I cannot verify this, and have no more details than
that.
The person in CHUG whom I used to contact was Mary Howell. Her phone
number was 376-7000. Not sure if she is still in Houston, or if she is
active in the club, but if she is, I know she would be glad to give you
info about it. I think they meet at the U. of H.
