#Mirror Drive

I have encountered yet another problem. I just got a Mirror Technologies
removable hard drive for my A3000. But, it doesn't work. When I power up
the machine, I get the kickstart menu; the machine doesn't boot off of the
internal drive. I have the SCSI device number set for 5 and I have tried
other numbers with no luck. I put the termination plug in and that had fect
either. (It isn't the last or first drive, I have the Seagate (from the
other message if you saw it) as the first device) Help!

Another addition to the problem… I tried just connecting the cable and
not the drive and I still got the same problem. For some reason, the hard
drives are not being recognized. I was able to boot the system by floppy
and run HDutils and it said that no devices were attached… Is there some
kind of jumper I have to change in order to use the external SCSI port?

Could it have anything to do with the boot priority (bootpri)?

I'm not sure… Does anyone know how the A3000's SCSI interface works? Do
external devices get priority over interal devices?
-Tim
The boot priority is one of the data elements stored in the rigid disk
block (and is set via the HDToolBox for the 3000). If a drive doesn't have
a valid RDB, it's not a boot candidate. If more than one drive have the
same boot priority, I believe that it is the ordering of the SCSI ID's that
determine the priority, with the _lower_ ID being considered the higher
priority. I'm not totally sure of this last point (it may be reversed).
Hope this helps….
P.S. – I wouldn't recommend using the same BootPri value and allowing the
"tie-breaker" to make the determination anyway.
You might have to disconnect pin 25 in the external cable. If memory
serves, that feeds "terminator power" to the drive. The drive has it's own
termination. I once had a similar problem with an external Ricoh on a 2000.
Check the docs for the SCSI port to make sure I remember that pin number
correctly.
JIM!!!!! I owe you my life! Disconnecting pin 25 (by putting a piece of
tape over it) was the answer. My syquest Mirror Technologies drive is
working great! I've never been so relieved. 🙂 😉 🙂 🙂 🙂 :^) Thank you…
Glad to help…. I get lots of useful info here myself, it's good to have a
chance to return the favor. I would recommend a more permanent solution
than tape though.
