A friend of mine (with an IBM clone) showed me some examples of what he
can do with a hand scanner…needless to say I'm interested in getting one
for my A3000. But first I have a few questions:
1. Is the Golden Image scanner the most widely used hand scanner?
2. Are there others…advantages, disadvantages?
3. Does the advertised Migraph Touch up software enable one to easily
stitch multiple scans together?
4. Can one scan a typed page as graphics and then transfer this to a
text file for editing.
5. Anything else I should know???

Roger,
I have no first hand experience with any hand scanners but something
that you might like to know that Ive read in the Britsh press is that the
Cameron Handy Scanner is the only Amiga hand scanner that can do OCR.
This may or may not be true,it is only what Ive read and am passing
on, I know that an OCR capability would be an important consideration if I
were about to purchase one.
Hope this helps,or at very least can be confirmed or denied by the
more knowledgable.

Just what is meant by OCR?

An OCR is an Optical Character Reader. That is…a scanner that
instead of bringing in a graphic image of the text on the page…brings in
the text itself just the same as if you typed it in.

Did you dsay this was available only in the U.K.? Sounds like just the
thing I would need.

No…I did not say they were only available in the UK.
BTW…OCR's are a combination of hardware and software. Just about
any scanner will do…and with the appropriate software…the scanned image
can be converted into text. Presuming it's set up right of course.
However, be aware, that as a general rule, while they're getting
better, OCR's are still not that good. In particular, home type units can
not read hand writting, can only read certain fonts (both size and style),
require the scanned image be fairly precise (the paper positioned on the
scanner) and even under the best conditions don't always get 100% of the
text.

I dont know if the Cameron Hand Scanner is available in the US…I
suggest you look around for it if you think that OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) is a feature you will need.
Since you started this thread I got a bit interested in hand
scanners and went to look at a few in operation.Something that I have
discovered which may be of interest is that some scanners that are made for
the PC world can do 256 grey scales which looks very impressive (most
(people I asked wanted to show me one working on a PC) but most of the
Amiga items will only do 16 grey scales,although I have read that the new
Pandaal Daatascan will do 64 in 300 and 400 DPI (dots per inch) mode.On the
down side the Pandaal wont do OCR!.
Im sorry if this only adds to the confusion but I think that they
are points worth considering…..Its seems that a 256 grey scale hand
scanner that will do OCR isnt available yet for the Amiga….if Im wrong
then point me in the right direction and I will buy one! (as long as its
cheap enough!).
