Jason, You should probably be warned up front that you may have trouble running some of the programs here on a 512K Amiga. Chances are that you'll be a lot happier once you get at least another floppy disk and expand the computer to at least 1 meg of RAM. That being said, here's some basic instructions for downloading with Amigaterm. 1. Ignore the manual and set your serial port settings at 8 data bits, No Parity and 1 Stop bit. 2. Do not attempt to use a terminal emulation – make the TTY setting the default and use it. 3. Use CIS-B File Transfer protocol, which shows up as Compuserve on the menu. 4. Before you start, Initialize a new floppy disk and Rename it as DL. When the Compuserve menu prompts you for a "Filename for your computer:" give a complete name including the disk name. For example, if you wanted to download a file called ARCHLP.EXE, you would answer DL:ARCHLP.EXE at the CIS prompt. If you don't specify a disk name along with the file name, the file will probably attempt to download to your current disk. 5. Amigaterm doesn't have the best error trapping available. Make certain that your Floppy disk isn't write protected. Past versions of Amigaterm have been known to look like a file was downloading properly and then it wouldn't be on the disk. 6. Almost all the programs here are in some form of compressed archive format. To get an explanation of these files, one of your first downloads should be the ARCHLP.EXE program in LIB 5 of the AmigaUser Forum. This program is in executable form. Just run it after you download it. 7. You can practice downloading free of CIS connect charges (although communications surcharges still apply) in the Free Practice Forum (GO PRACTICE). Jason, The problem is almost certainly caused by an error in the AmigaTerm manual. If you will set your term for 8-N-1 (the manual tells you to set it for 7-El-?), you should be able to download without trouble. I would suggest that, once you get it going, you download something like BACKTALK, Access, or JRCOMM from Library 5 of AmigaUser. I think any of those will make it easier for you to download. While you are learning to do this, perhaps you would like to go to the PRACTICE forum, where you can learn to download without having to pay connect time charges. Over there (GO PRACTICE) you can learn to upload, download, and everything else that is done here, and everything you learn there works exactly the same way here. Please ask again if you need help.
