I've been told that the A2286 does not work properly with the A3000. I am
upgrading my father (via Power-Up and my serial number) from a clone to an
A3000/16 and need to have access to the 16-bit PC slots (only need one —
for a 9-track tape drive).
Does the A2286 fit in and work on and A3000? Anyone with first-hand
experience?

Yes….they work together, but you have to disable cacheing. I
forget the exact details (it's a command you insert in your
statup-sequence) but my dealer has sold several 3000/2286 combinations and
they're all working fine.

I use the A2286 BB in my A3000 along with a multi-function card (In fact im
using Q-modem right now to write this message from the IBM side)
The command that youhave to place in the startup-sequence is this
run >nil: cpu nodatacache binddrivers
Binddriveers should follow and the two of these should be at the top of
your startup sequence. This will allow you to use the BB under 2.0
Also, you will have to get ahold of a 3 1/2" 720k or 1.44 IBM compt.
floppie or place the 5 1/4" that comes with the BB in an external case. I
find it much more easy to just get a 1,4 meg 3 1/2" and place it in the
other 3 1/2" internal drive bay. you will have to get your drive cable
that comes with the bridegboard modified to work with the 3 1/2" as it is
too short and the connector is too larng for most 3 1/2" drives.
Do all this toss in a VGA/multi-function card, and you are all set. I also
recommend doing the patch to speed up the virtual drive.

I also own a 2286 BB and am interested in what you said about speeding up
the virtual drive. How do you do the patch and which virtual drive does it
affect? (the JLINK drives or the MAKEAB autoboot drive?)
Let me find my file on it and I will post it here for you.
It involves lifting pin 6 of u (I forget the chip) and attaching a wire to
it and running that to J17 (I think) pin 31
Like I said, let me find me file on it, and i'll post the corect jumpers
etc.
