#A3000 monitor advice

Hello. I (finally!) upgraded my A1000 to an A3000 during the last few days
of the CBM power up deal. But I havent bought a monitor yet and that's the
reason for this letter. Seems there are several choices and I was hoping
to get some advice on what is recommended for a multisync monitor.
Suggestions? I'd appreciate any! Can't wait to get started, and the old
A1000 monitor just doesn't do it justice.

I've looked at a few multi-syncs…I liked the Commodore 1950
myself.

As long as you still have your 1080 or 1084 RGB monitor (so you can use it
with the 15.x MHz output) then all you need is a decent VGA monitor.
I'm using a Panasonic PanaSync C1381 with my A3000 and really like its
display. It's a 13" multiscanning monitor, .28 dot pitch, does 800 X 600
non-interlaced (or 680 X 400, I cant remember) and 1024 X 800 interlaced
(without flicker). I bought it 'cause the price was great: $ 379.00
including cable that plugs right in to the 3000).

Does the Panasync scan down to the 15.x MHz range? I have been told
that it does.

The Panasonic PanaSync C1381 does not scan down to 15.x MHz. I believe it
only scans 30.5 – 35.5 or something like that.
It does, however, offer a very nice display using the A3000 31.5 port. The
dot pitch (.28mm) is better than the older C1391 (.31mm) and the case even
matches the A3000!

Uh, does the 1391 scan down to 15.x MHz. I was strongly under the
impression that one of the Panasonics did.

I believe that the C1391 DID scan to 15.x but:
a) I'm not sure
b) The 1391 is the older model and has been dicontinued (replaced by 1381)
c) The 1391 is about a $150 more than the 1381
d) the 1391 is .31 DP the 1381 is .28 DP
The 1391 also had a text switch… but you really don't need that on a .28
DP monitor like the 1381.

Others here have indicated a preference for the NEC 3D &
4D(expensive). I don't remember the particular advantages ie. dot pitch,
border removal, composite jack, etc. I purchased a Sony 1302 with my 3000
mostly because a.) the dealer had those, b.) I heard there were problems
with the Commodore multisync, c.) I have a preference for Triniton screens
(this one has a very black black & virtually no border). There is no
composite video jack though (I think the Commodore multisync has one).

The Seiko, which has a .25mm dot pitch, just happens to use a Sony
Trinitron tube. It's unclear whether the rest of the Sony and Seiko models
are similar/identical.

That's interesting that a third-party is using Sony picture tubes.
I'm surprised that Sony licenses or sells the tubes for another name-plate.
It doesn't seem like their style. It could make sense if they feel another
company could market to the business/computer market with the kind of
success Sony has in the home market.

You're wrong about Sony … they sell so many of there parts to third
parties, that they sometimes have a hard time supplying parts for products
they manufacturer! Open up any other brand Japanese electronics, and
there's a very good chance you'll find many Sony parts …

Sony has been licensing the trinitron technology for a few years now. Mike

The Sony has a nice clean look and although technically not a flat
screen monitor, the triniton tube is inherently flat, just not perfectly
square at the top and bottom. The color black on this monitor is BLACK.
One of our local BBS's has color and the red lettering is almost three
dimensional against the black screen. I believe the dot pitch is .25 one of
the best. The screen display size adjusts nicely to the various WB 2.0
modes using the Commodore flicker fixer on a 3000. This monitor was only
about $60.00 more than the Commodore multisync and the dealer had one in
stock when I picked up my 3000. I asked about an alternative monitor and
this was what he had. My other choices were either the NEC 3D or the
Commodore multisync.

With regard to your Sony 1302 — what are its upper and lower synch limits?
Does it go all the way down to 15.75 kHz? Also, what various kinds of
inputs will it accept?

From the manual:
Horizontal sync signal frequency:
15.0 – 34.0 kHz
Input: RGB input (D-sub 9 pin) (Analog and TTL available)
There is no composite RCA type jack. I would assume therefore that
composite input is not posible. However my genlock connects and works no
problem so the lack of an RCA type composite input really doesn't matter to
me.

I have the C= 1950 and am pleased with it.
I suggest the Seiko Multisync. It got top billing for technical and visual
performance in a recent PC Magazine comparison of just about every type of
monitor in existance. I saw it advertised mail order for about $600.
