#Hooking Up a Mac Syquest
13 messages in this thread
What is the proper procedure to connect a Syquest (Model 555 Ser # S253739
ucp computer products 6/7/91 from a mac) to a 2090A on a 2500. The 2500 has
a drive mounted on it already this will be the second device. What changes
in Startup-sequence and Devs:mountlist and any other tweaks neccessary ?
The HD is partitioned to fh0: and fh1: presumably fh1: is ffs. Any ideas
where I can get controller software if neccessary ?
By the by is the 2090A SCSI at all ? If not what controller would you
recomend? He has a 2090A and a Trumpcard (assy 006 rev 3.1 1989 IVS) to
sell or trade if he needs a new one.

There is no proper way! The 2090A will not support a SyQuest. The eariler
2091's will not support one either however, the later 2091 "should" support
a SyQuest since the A3000 does. I tried the 2090 and gave up, bought a GVP
and THAT works fine (also my 3000 does work). I am pretty sure that a
SyQuest rev older that 5 will not work with either.

Are you referring to the ROM rev or the Western Digital 33C93 revision? (or
Both). I've done some interesting mixing and matching with testing against
2.0, but I guess I shouldn't elaborate in open forum.

I am referring to SyQuests ROM version number.
Bill, I read that 2091's older than REv. 6 will require a new ROM,
available from Commodore, in order to work with the 2.0 ROMs. Will this
new ROM also make them compatible with the Syquest drives?
Betty
Don't know, I was referrering to the SyQuest ROM level number. I do know
that there was a problem with 2091's and SyQuests that was "fixed" by
SyQuest but was (at least in part) due to a problem in the 2091 ROM.
Supposedly, that was being addressed but the issue became irrelevant (to
me) because a later version of SyQuest worked anyway.
Let me see if I can straighten things out: 1. The 2091 has no problem with
2.0; it doesn't require a ROM change. 2. The 2091 had a problem with
drives that used RESELECTION. The
6.6 version of the 2091 roms correct this problem. NOTE: this
problem only occured with 2091s that had the Western Digital A part.
If your 2091 doesn't have the A part, you shouldn't use 6.6. 3. Users
of the 020 and 030 accelerator cards may need a rom
change to work with 2.0. The boot rom was not removing itself
from the memory map, so conflicted with the larger size of 2.0 roms.
When 2.0 roms are available, the 020/030 boot rom should also
be available.

Thanks Andy.

Andy,
Is the 2090A going to have any problems with 2.0?
Does the 2090A properly support RESELECTION?
Will the 2090A roms be upgraded to support RDB?
Do you have the order numbers for the 020/030 boot roms, so we can get the
dealers to have them on hand when 2.0 roms are available? If you do not
have the info yet, will you post same when you get it?

The 2090a works fine with 2.0. The 2090 does not support reselection; but
unless you have 2 or more SCSI drives on the bus you don't care about
reselection. Most Amiga HD controllers don't support reselection.
I can give no information on any upgrade plans for the 2090.
I don't have order numbers; but your dealer should.
andy
Andy,
IF you don't have order numbers for the 020/030 roms, how about revision
numbers? My dealer is 3.5 hours from here, and don't like bothering him
unless I have to.
As the 2090A controller stands right now (under 2.0), how does it deal with
removable media? Is it capable of noticing a media change and informing
the OS of such, or does one have to manually issue a diskchange command
(which I thought only worked on the floppies)? By removable media, I mean
CD-ROMs, R/W optical drives, DAT drives, streaming tape drives, etc.

I'll have to check what the correct version number is. The 2090a
doesn't do anything special for removable media. You will have to
manually issue the diskchange.
Bill:
The problem is that some of the Syquest ROMs (older ones) can't handle
reselection (aka disconnect/reconnect), and several Amiga controllers have
trouble with them. I happen to have an older Syquest that has this problem,
but a friends doesn't. GVP supplys a program to go around the problem, the
HardFrame can get around this problem, I don't know about others.
