Hello all, I work at a broadcast television station we have created a number of graphics on a Q950 macintosh in 32 nit color. Is there any disk format that I can transfer into the Amiga that has a Video Toaster attached?? I know the mac side real well and nothing about the Amiga. Any help would be GREAT!!! Thanks Bob Ross

The Amiga has a Prg/Floppy Drive combo that allows Amiga's to Read/Write Format MAC Floppies, its called MAC2DOS if I'm not mistaken. Also Newtek makes a Gadget called the Mac Toasterlink or something like that that networks yer MAC and Toaster together so you can easily share files and such.

You can use Mac-2-DOS from New Horizons software to make a direct floppy read/write to/from Mac and Amiga disks. It also includes conversion utilities for graphics images, including TIFF and perhaps others. New Horizons has a topic on this board, so you could ask 'em about it. Another route would be to simply modem the graphics over to the Amiga. Some Amiga software, like Art Dept. Pro and possibly ImageMaster, can read Mac-format graphics. The Toaster software alone won't do it, I don't think.

Hi Ron, Thanks for the info. Bob

Your images might be a bit too large for this… but you could use PC format disks, then read them on the Amiga using CrossDOS, a commercial product that's also part of Workbench 2.1. However, you'll be limited to 720K per PC disk, and you can't use high-density floppies.

John, -> Your images might be a bit too large for this… Size is no problem if you own ADPro. Just use Splitz and Joinz. Tom / Amiga Imagineer from Switzerland with AutoPilot engaged

Have you actually used Splitz and Joinz on the Macintosh? I've never been able to make it work. I have been able to make it work in the DOS environment. Haven't tried the Windows one.

Actually it's fairly easy to transfer split files to the DOS environment since MSDOS's copy commands allow the automatic joining of binary files to each other. There are PD utilities as well for splitting them. Kermit Woodall Nova Design, Inc.

I'm glad there is reasoning to this. I could and still can't make it work in the Mac environment. I've done some work with Resedit and it still does not like whatever ASDG has done to it. I frankly don't use the Splitz and Joinz on the Mac and I have an Amax and it is nothing to transfer a disk to disk partition.

Margaret, Sorry if my msg read confused. I missed the beginning of the thread. I have never seen a Version of Splitz&Joinz for the Mac. Using SoftPC you might well be able to use them though. The Windows Version does work although there's a bug in the file requester. I often carry multi-MB PPage PS printings to the laser printer in the office. It was included in my version of Adpro. Sorry I can't give you the version number etc. I find that a Targa file transfer between PC/Mac/ Amiga files is really the way to go. It is the most ubiquitous and it works!

Hmm… I may have to call ASDG for the Mac version. My dad uses a Mac IIsi and we transfer files via the MS-DOS path. Seems that is the lowest common denominator between advanced computer systems. For him it's not as funny because Apple File Exchange is much more cumbersome than CrossDOS. Tom / Amiga Imagineer from Switzerland with AutoPilot engaged

As I said, I couldn't make it go. Let me know what you find out. I have an Amax and a partitioned harddrive. That works flawlessly. The transfer is quick and painless. I transfer 7-10 megabyte graphics files to a Syquest cartridge and then have them converted with Photoshop to PICT files. This is what is required by the service bureau that I use for their film recorder. They'll do a Targa conversion to PICT but they will charge you $65.00 an hour to do. Probably wouldn't take them that long but I get it to them in PICT anyway.

Margaret, Since my dad owns a Mac I am heavily interested in Amax and Emplant. Can you tell me what Photoshop does that ADPro and IM don't? Tom / Amiga Imagineer from Switzerland with AutoPilot engaged

I don't own Photoshop but I have Macintosh friends who let me use my Syquest cartridges on their machines. I only use it to make a PICT file and to verify that the image made it to the Syquest. There is an old demo of the program in the Adobe forum here. It is a long download. Perhaps a Macintosh user group/store would have a demo copy. It is my opinion that with IM and Adpro and Gigamem, you would not need to use Photoshop (except for that PICT file format!). It is much nicer to work in the Amiga environment. Photoshop has one function that I like "unsharp mask" which is excellant for cleaning up scans. You can use it after you scale an image – it sharpens the edges a tat. IM has a super scaling function. I've taken smaller resolution files and bumped them up about double with it. I do get some jaggies but I get a nice image. It is better to render the exact file size you need with Imagine. Unfortunately, that takes a long time on my machine.

Margaret, I have taken a quick look at photoshop at one of my dad's Mac friends'. I love my ADPro and IM, but it can never hurt to maintain a wide horizon. -> Unfortunately, that takes a long time on my machine. When you've waited two weeks for a three-second Sculpt-4D Animation to render on an A500 just to find out it isn't what you expected (like me), an 030/50 is like heaven. I got used to the speed too fast, though ;^). Tom / Amiga Imagineer from Switzerland with AutoPilot engaged

Thomas, Photoshop on the mac is an Industry standard photo retouching s/w. Works with very large ( not video res ) images quickly? Full color with the right h/w. Kinda like DCTV paint with no limit to image size. This type of s/w is still yet to come to the Amiga. IM and ADPRO are image processors, big difference, thoogh Photoshop does have some IP functions.
#26102From: Thomas VoirolJan 28, 1993 12:25 PM
John, IM does have paint/retouching functions and can apply an effect to any part of an image, even a freehand drawn region. Apart from gfx subsystems support, does that bring it close to Photoshop? Tom / Amiga Imagineer from Switzerland with AutoPilot engaged

I would like to point out a slight mis-statement: When using WorkBench 2.1 & a High Density Commodore Floppy Drive, it is easy to transparently use HD (1.4MB) IBM Floppies on your Amiga. You can even use the same drive to read HD Mac & IBM Floppies from the AMAXII+ Mac Emulator, if you have Apple File Exchange, Dayna's DOS Mounter, or a number of other DOS utilities for the Mac. Beside using ADPro or such to convert a TIFF or Targa image, you can use the ReadPict utility which came with the Toaster to load a Pict image. To get the file to the Amiga, either use a null-modem cable, a PC floppy with crossDos/MultiDos on the Amiga side, or get ToasterLink from NewTek.

Bob, Mac-2-Dos from New Horizons will allow you to bring your images over to your Amiga, and if they don't include any conversion for images, our ImageFX package for the Amiga reads and writes TIFF format images among many many other image formats. (shameless plug) Kermit Woodall Nova Design, Inc.

Ben, I'm still waiting for my prize, too. Kermit referred me to GVP, where I talked to a nice Ms. Shiela Kirby…who told me that they would be sending it out "real soon now". Jonathan, via AutoPilot // Only Amiga makes \\// it possible…

As did I, on Kermit's suggestion. Not his fault, obviously. Ms. Kirby seems like a nice person. –Ben …via AutoPilot
