Andrew, my firm VRS Media has been doing forensic animations for over four
years. Unfortunately, the average has only been one per year! Although
clients are generally thrilled with the results, there is still quite a bit
of hesitation on the part of law firms approached for animations.
Generally, animation is called upon for very special cases. I have been
using the Amiga for all my animation, along with Imagine from Impulse, Inc.
I recently purchased 3D Studio and a 486/33 and am hoping to utilize it in
upcoming work. But given the rate of forensic jobs that come through the
door, all I can say is: thank God for flying logos! –Rick Rodriguez
Lawyers are conservative by nature, especially when their tactics are
dictated by even more conservative judges. Fingerprints, photographs, DNA
typing all shared the same judicial resistance for years, yet all are now
commonly admitted into evidence with the proper foundation.
We're taking the unusual step of conducting a seminar series to counter
this conservatism. When I was trying cases every day, I longed for a better
way to illustrate locations, actions, and relationships over time. 3D
animation was only available as mainframe experiments. Now, it can be done
on a desktop and at a price almost every case can support. If we at
Autodesk can do our part to educate the ultimate consumers of legal animat,
i.e. the lawyers, then everyone should benefit including the juries who
would otherwise have to sit through days of boring testimony.

I'm located in Miami, Florida. I will be attending Siggraph in Chicago at
the end of the month. Will you be there? –Rick Rodriguez
I won't be going to Siggraph this year. It's between the first seminar and
the American Bar Association Expo in August, and I'll be extremely busy.
By the way, Miami is on the short list of cities we're considering for the
second round of the legal tour. What are your impressions of the legal
community there? I'd be interested in your opinions.
