Steve: Just a wild shot in the dark: alter your Capstan Lock from 4F to 2F
(or the other way). Also, have you checked software switches for field
variables? If there is one, you might try to switch it from its current
setting and see if that clears things up. Your problem definitely sounds
field-related to me. Too bad I didn't know you were there. I just spent 4
days in Clearwater and would have loved to drop in on you. We'll be back,
though, so send me some private mail and let me know what you are up to.

We tried 2/4 and 4 capstan lock, recommendation was 2/4.
Things that we noticed: Sync is different between composite and RGB we had
to keep alternating pins 6 & 7 depending which disk to tape method we were
trying. Also we wonder how to use a scope to adjust the horizontal control
on the back metal panel of the Targa+. We gave up on component since our
ForA Transcoder had a lousey black, no where near 7.5 IRE. The external
adjustments on Tcoder were RGB only. Had no effect on black level. I wonder
what the best sync path is for disk to tape. If we render composite should
we run Targa+ composite into video ref on BVW75 then loop it into video
in? Or give deck black burst in video ref, and composite into video in?
Boy, do I have a lot to learn about the video side of this! All help
appreciated.

We go out to a BVW-75 all the time and used the following setup:
Targa+
Diaquest 422
Techtronix Sync Generator
Faroudja Transcoder (great btw)
My understanding is that you should stripe your tape and record
with capstan set at 2 fields. The cabling is as follows:
Black burst to Ref Video In on BVW
RGB and House compsite sync into the Tcoder
Component video into BVW (make sure the component switch is
UP on the back of the BVW and the input select on front is set to
component as well)
Finally, with a BNC T connector you have House comp
sync, comp sync into the Targa +, and Ref Sync In from the
Diaquest.
A diagram is available on page 189 of the Diaquest manual. When you render
to disk, it doesn't matter how you go out to your deck and component should
give you a FAR better picture than composite.
Finally, Truevision sells calibration software for about $150.

You advise is greatly appreciated. It also concurs with our findings doing
a post mortem on our unacceptable disk to tape transfer.
It's those little things you know…. 🙂
Here's what happened, we think. Though we had the front panel switch set
for capsten lock 2FD (at least once in our variations!) the system menu for
the deck had capsten lock panel switch disabled.
We are scheduled for a 'make good' transfer in a local post house next
Wednesday. And then do transfers ourselves again starting July 16th with
the rental equipment again.
Thanks for your comments on the Transcoder, we cannot say the same for the
ForA unfortunately.
BTW Truevision now has a forum on multimedia, and Greg Grena has been very
informative about the Targa+. He's sysop for lib 6.
