#Screen Capture
6 messages in this thread
What if you wanted to do a screen capture of the 3D Studio modules in order
to get a good print out. What programs would be good, and what capacity
would the printer need to be so that a good image was printed. (I am
writing curriculum).
We have Hijaak and are using an epson laser (hp IIp compatible). I believe
the epson is upgradeable to postscript. Will this be enough? I have tried a
screen capture with the current configuration, bringing the image into
wordperfect for windows, but the printout is lousy, too grainy. Any
suggestions as to programs, etc. would be very helpful.
Thank you in advance for your kind condideration.

Kevin, Jack Powell was very involved in that aspect of the 3DS docs…
he'll be able to give you some advice.

I used the PixelPop program that comes with Animator Pro to capture the
interface screens as incrementally numbered files. I then loaded them as
frames of a flic using the Numpic.poc program in Animator Pro. I edited any
pictures that needed editing in AniPro, and then set the Picture .pdr type
to Tiff Grayscale before using Numpic again to save the frames back out as
grayscale pictures. (The document processor we used for the manual required
grayscale Tiffs.)
If you've got a display board capable of it, I recommend getting a driver
and increasing the interface resolution to 800×600 or higher, just for the
screen captures. Of course, if you do that, you'll probably need a
different capture program than PixelPop–which doesn't handle anything
higher than 640×480. For a curriculum description, however, 640×480 should
do fine.
Oh, yes, another important thing. We changed the system colors in the
3ds.set file so we had a monochrome interface. I no longer have that file,
so I can't tell you what values we used, but you should experiment with
capturing and printing using different grayscale levels. I recall that the
monochrome 3ds interface we used was horrible to look at, and very
difficult to use.

Thanks Jack, that sounds well worth a try. What about printing?

We printed our drafts on a laser printer through our desktop-publishing
software off of a SPARC station (using FrameMaker). The manuals themselves
were printed to a Postscript file and then sent to a professional printer.

Ok got it. Thanks a lot for your help.
