#QB5.02 The 3D look?

I just applied the 5.02 patch to my 5.01 QB. The patch appears to have done its job but also stripped the 3D look from QB as well (I'm using WB2.0). It's not supposed to do that is it? Looks "ikky" without the 3D look! (Also, is this Mark or Rick Unland as the headers have said in past messages?) Dan McCoy – via Whap! and saving money doing it too!

Thing is, I've applied this patch several times and it always does the same thing. My original QB on the disk is 5.0, I applied the 5.01 patch I dl'ed from here a few weeks back and did the same for the 5.02 patch. Always strips my 3D look but leaves an app icon under 2.0 so I know it knows it's under 2.0. Perhaps I'll try yet another way… Dan McCoy – via Whap! and saving money doing it too!

Actually, I've been playing around with miscellaneous things today and just happened to try out QB5.02 again and this time, all is normal! No more 1.3 look in 2.0! 🙂 I'm not sure what happened but I've reset the system several times in between the last time I applied the patch. Rick, Like Dan, I find that 5.02 runs without a "3-D" look. Furthermore, the window will not scroll when backing up to show which files are being processed (I have'nt tried yet to restore), unless I resize periodically. Otherwise, I am very pleased with the new version. I backed up 21,706,872 bytes today in 3 hours, using 20 floppies, with 23% compression. I am not an expert in the subject but that is the best performance I have ever got from a number of backup programs i have tried. [D What does Quarterbook do on encountering files crunched on disk with PowerPacker or something similar? If it is slowed by the presence of precompressed files (like other backup programs), it would be useful to include an exclude option in a later upgrade which nonetheless backed up the files in question. One thing to try out is reset your machine with the three finger salute and retry QB5.02. If that doesn't work, turn the machine off then back on and try again. I'm not sure what I did but all I know is that QB5.02 has that "3-D" look just like 5.01 did and I haven't touched it since applying the patch and a few system resets and turning the system off. I haven't tried backing up with it yet so I'm not sure if the symptoms you cited exist after this discovery… Dan McCoy – via Whap! and saving money doing it too!

I was just told that QB has a preferred color setup it wants when it runs. If it can't get what it likes, it diverts to the 2-D look. I was using my own screen colors when I noticed the 2-D look and before discovering the 3-D look was back, I went back to the standard 2.0 default screen colors. A quick check shows that's exactly what had happened. Give that a shot. Dan McCoy – via Whap! and saving money doing it too!

Dan, We made a change in the program that caused some color schemes to end up looking 2-D. There's really nothing I can do about it at this time. You can run Quarterback on its own screen if you like. That will always give you a 3-D look. Rick was not supposed to change the name. I think that I have corrected the problem. It wasn't that the color scheme changed but as if something was fooled into having all gadgets and windows rendered with a 1.3 look. This happened after I applied the patch to 5.01. I just happened to execute QB5.02 today and everything is back to normal. I've reset the system several times in between (I like crashing! 🙂 ) so perhaps something was afoul in memory and that's what caused the problem. All I know is that it's back to the way I remember 5.01 to be. A 2.0 3D look! 🙂 The "Rick" question was just curiosity. I've met Rick Unland on several occassions (old JPL user group meetings) and was going to say "HI!". Thanks for the info. All is fine now. Dan, In Quarterback 5.0.2 we slightly modified the algorithm that picks what colors to use for the 3-D look. This has the result that more screen color combinations have the 3-D look, but some combinations that used to no longer do. When Quarterback can't find what it thinks is an appropriate set of colors for its 3-D look, it falls back to a 2-D look. The only solution is to change your screen colors slightly until you get the 3-D look back. What Quaterback needs is a set of four colors (or something close to them): White (15, 15, 15) Light gray (10, 10, 10) Dark gray ( 5, 5, 5) Black ( 0, 0, 0) (The numbers above are RGB values for colors it considers to be a "perfect" fit). If one of your colors is something like (6, 2, 12) then it won't fit in very well. James Bayless New Horizons Software, Inc.

You just pinpointed what had happened. I did change my WB colors before applying the patch and before the discovery that the 3D look was back, I went back to the defaults. What'd I'd LIKE to see QB do is just use my preferred screen colors anyway instead of going back to a 2-D look. Sure, my colors may look screwy but the 2-D look is worse. 🙂 But now that I understand what was going on, I feel much better. The mystery is solved.
