#Face-building glitch
9 messages in this thread
Roger,
Just read your comment (I got behind by over 2000 messages due to a
triple-whammy of work and travel!) on the unsmoothable faces from AME.
I've seen that problem several times on things I've made in AME or
booleaned in 3DS. Usually, it was due to invisible faces with no width
sandwiched between otherwise respectibly fat faces. In other words, the
three vertices that made up an offending face were all on the same line, so
the face was invisible. I could often find them only by zooming way in and
scanning the offending line, perhaps selecting faces manually and looking
for oddballs.
Other times, the culprit has been a group of vertices, usually on the
corners of an AME fillet, which looked OK at normal magnification but
failed to get properly welded on import – probably due to some numerical
precision burp in AME. At first, I fixed them manually. Later I got
smarter and selected the whole mess, cranked the weld threshold way up (.01
or .1), and welded/selected. Once I spent 4 hours repairing an object
which even Scotty couldn't have beamed up intact.

Welcome back!

O venerable mr gp….
Thanks… I'm caught up till the next time. I think I've built ten million
faces worth of objects since I talked to you last – and I feel another wave
coming!
You get an A+ in "Best Helper" and an F- in "Greedy Businessman". You've
accidentally talked me into keeping the ATVISTA and out of giving you a
good deal! Thanks!
Now, do you (or anyone) happen to have an encoder/decoder for sale (er,
cheap?) that will let me play with NTSC on the VISTA?
JKJ (still waiting for SIGRAPH info <g>)

I miss out on more good deals that way… <g>
I think you'll really enjoy the card – if not, we'll be happy to take it off
your hands! And if we can't, Martin Foster will – but he won't let anybody
know! <big g>
What fun new objects have you built? And when do I get to see the tommygun?
Greg
Now then! No more of those low blows! <g> I still insist if I had enough
money for an AT-Vista, I'd buy an Exabyte 8500 instead, haha! <g>
Oh, Martin, were you listening? <innocent g>
I'll keep your secret, it's ok…

The capital of Abyssinia is Addis Ababa. How much is an Exabyte 8500?
Will it also solve all my backup problems too? (just backed up again to
seven DC2120 tapes) JKJ
You're half correct. Addis Ababa was the capital of Abyssinia which is
now Ethiopia. I don't know how much an Exabyte 8500 is (5 gb capacity
on an 8mm tape) but I can get an 8200 (2.5 gb capacity on an 8mm
tape) for $1400-$2000. It would solve all your backup problems plus
it would solve your .tga files to D1 video problems for when you do
network quality animations.
I've been building all kinds of neat stuff lately – from furniture to space
shuttles & satellites – just starting in on some gas mask models. This is
great fun! I'll send the mesh as soon as I save up the $15 for the upgrade
I need. <g>
