GVP SCSI problem

Has anyone had any troubles with the GVP combo board and its scsi
interface? It seems the positioning of the SCSI cable with respect to the
power supply in my A2000 is critical. If the cable is in the wrong
position the amiga won't boot and comes up with GURU errors. If the cable
is shifted while the Amiga is running, it comes up with hard drive errors.
My hard-drive is mounted in the left hand drive bay. I was wondering if
anybody had experienced this problem and whether mounting the hard drive on
the back of the combo board might help. I've resorted to using my
microbotics hardframe controller for the time being. It works without any
problems.
I have a GVP combo board (33 mhz 030, SCSI, RAM) and a hard drive in both
the left-hand drive bay and the 5 1/4 bay with no troubles like you
mention. Maybe something is rubbing against something it shouldn't? I
know the power cable does sometimes get caught near the RAM chips on the
GVP board…
My guess is my power supply is noisy and the scsi cable is picking it up. I
might try switching the power supply and seeing whether that cures the
problem. I think the location of the scsi connector beside the power
supply might not be such a good idea. The hardframe 2000 controller which
sits a fair distance away from the power supply might not be hearing the
noise. Steve

It's also possible to have a broken cable (either near the header on the
accelerator or on the drive) and moving the cable repeatedly breaks and
makes the connection. It could also be a break in the middle of the cable,
but the connectors are usually placed under more stress than just the raw
cable… It's a thought…

Thanks, I never thought of that. The cable I have now has some scrapes and
it is possible that a connection is being broken. I'll try a new cable and
see if the problem continues. Steve

I had the same problem. In my case the SCSI cable is nearly 3 feet long as
I use a Bomac tower with several drives. My solution was to build a SCSI
cable using shielded ribbon cable. It's expensive stuff (about $10/foot)
but it completely solved all problems.

Redmond cable will configure a shielded round scsi cable (36") for around
$30.

I shouldda known. Redmond can make just about anything!

I think I'll try a new cable first. If that doesn't work then I'll try the
shielded scsi cable. Steve
