#Modem advice

Hey, I'm really back now, and have a question about modems…. (I bet this
has been covered a thousand times already, sorry)
I'm currently working with a borrowed modem, since my Supra 2400 went belly
up during my months long hiatus from CIS. 🙁
But, that means that I can consider a 9600 replacement 🙂
So, what abou the Supra 9600? Or others that folks suggest. My preference
would be to have a fax-modem, or future compatibility with fax-modem comm
programs, etc, but am not sure what I need for that. Aside from Black
Belt's ClickFax, there doesn't seem to be other working fax-modems
available right now? (ClickFax is only 2400 baud at modem speeds, right?
I really want 9600+ modem speeds)
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'll be making a decision by this
weekend, so that I can get my borrowed modem back to my friend, so if you
have advice, give it now! Thanks in advance!

I'm using…and really like, the PPI PM14400FXSA modem. I'd highly
reccomend it.

Thanks for the advice on the PPI modem Don. I think I've decided to go
with the Supra V32.bis (9600 faxmodem) however. I couldn't find any hard
info on the PPI modem, and have to make a quick decision this time (usually
I let several hundred dollar hardware/software decisions sit for a few
days, just to be sure).
The Supra seems like a reasonable choice; conservative, since so many
others have it. Like most conservative choices, it may not necessarily be
the BEST choice, but will get me there.

You can grab some info on the PPI in one of the libraries in the
PPIFORUM here on CIS.

Good luck with your choice. You say it's the "conservative" choice. I'm
not sure how you define conservative. The vast majority of CompuServe
sysops who use v.32 and/or v.32bis modems use the PPI — It uses the AT&T
chip set (claimed to be "the best" in a recent PC Mag survey when
referring to a $10k+ Paradyne modem that uses the chip set), has a 12 char
lcd display, and has a lifetime warranty (PPI is a wholely own subsidary
of Hayes).

Well, I guess I was defining 'conservative' as 'most likely to be popular'
or something like that 🙂 Supra has sold so many modems to so many
people that I figured that their 9600 would also sell a lot, hence it would
get a lot of support from other programs, etc. Probably the wrong way of
thinking about it, and *maybe* not the choice I would have made if I'd had
more time to research, but what the heck, it's only a modem. So long as it
gets to onto CIS and a few other boards, and will serve to fax some stuff
to folks (not intensive fax use) then I'll likely be satisfied.

John: I have the Supra 14.4 FaxModem and if you want my honest opinion, if
I had to do it over again I would purchase the PPI. The Supra has too many
'Quirks' and since they haven't sent me the update roms yet, I haven't been
convinced otherwise. Everything I've heard and read about the PPI modem has
been positive. By the way, I still have your NASA CD's around here. Did you
ever get yourself a CD-Rom drive? How about sending me Email with your
address again and I will get them sent off to you. I dropped off CompuServe
for about 4 months because it was getting too expensive calling from out
here in the boonies. But now that I have the 14.4 it cuts down the online
time considerably, and I don't call CIS$ as much as I use to.

well, I'll soon be able to confirm or no problems with the Supra. One
should arrive on Tuesday or so. Leaping before I look or something like
that 🙂
Several others here have had good success with the Supra, so I feel
confident. I've had some pretty flakey hardware hooked up in the past, and
it worked, so I expect that a plain old modem will go fine. Will let you
know. Thanks.

I'm using Supra's V.32bis SupraFAXModem and it works just fine. The Amiga
version includes a program called GPFax, and it too works really nice. I
would recomend this modem any time of the day. A friend of mine also has
the Supra, and he likes it too. We had been using old Anderson Jacobson
v.32 modems before, with no error correction, or data compression, and
with the v.32bis modem we're able to double the speed we were getting
(before we got usually around 800cps with the AJs now we get 1600cps with
the Supras) The GPFax software works good, can be Iconized so that you can
have it running in the background to get FAX calls, and it has an AREXX
port so that you can even write scripts to handle differentiating between
FAX & DATA calls if you want to run a BBS & still be able to get FAX
calls.

I think the SupraFaxModem would suit your needs. Alot of people use the
PPI which is also a fax modem. It has fax capabilities but there is no
Amiga software available for it. Supra does have fax support on the Amiga
and it's pretty cheap too.
