Toaster for 3000T

We are looking to get an Amiga 3000T for multimedia work. We were
wondering if there is a Video Toaster which will work in this system.

I just finished installing a Video Toaster in a customer's 3000T today.
There's presently only one model of the Toaster- it's designed to fit the
2000 case. To run it in a 3000 or 3000T you have to get creative. There was
someone on here who said the managed to do it without modifying the case,
but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I ended up enlarging the opening in
the back of the case to allow access to the top connector. It did work fine
though…

It looked like it would fit if I could have 'beamed' it into place. I
couldn't flex it enough to get it into the slot. Even then, the number 1
input would have been inside the case. 🙁 Looks like a job for Mr.
Hacksaw. 🙂
put the cable on input 1 before you get the Toaster in, I heard this was
the trick…

Thanks for the information. We can get creative if we have to, but would
rather not. The 3000T gives us so much more expandability that we realy
want it as our base system.

It wasn't actually that difficult. I just taped a lot of antistatic plastic
around the case to catch the waste & used a hacksaw to enlarge the opening.
The hard part was taking a saw to a $3500 computer. 🙂 The regular 3000
with the Toaster Cozy & external SCSI box is also a good idea… although I
don't know if the Cozy is actually shipping.

We use Toasters in 3000T's. No need to bend the board or cut the case if
you get a little creative. Since input 1 is hidden by the Tower case, we
put in another bracket with a seperate input 1 and 2 on it. That way there
is no need to modify anything (you do need to solder the new inputs to the
toaster card but you don't have to break anything to do it. I'm using a
gvp 040 in my tower and it is consistently 40% faster than my Progressive
040 in my 2000.

re: 3000 or 3000T installation with no modifications.
I see four ways.
First, don't use Input #1 at all. :/
Second, physically move the BNC assembly down (requiring de/soldering and
voiding Toaster warranty).
Third, make a custom bracket that will fit in the space below the bottom
BNC and the 3000's case. Nothing but air there and a nice hole for objects
to fall in to. On this bracket, install a BNC connector and connect it to
input #1 via wiring (again soldering and possibly voiding the warranty).
Input #1 will be blocked by the case but the BNC on the custom braket will
take the place of Input #1. I know of one NewTek authorized dealer doing
this in Southern California. Whether this is approved by NewTek or not is
not known to me.

sync from input 1 …
Those of us using the Toaster strickly for LightWave don't mind forgetting
about input #1. 🙂

It turns out that Ive been using my toaster mostly for LW (I love it) but I
found from the beginning that I couldnt live without my Personal TBC and
frame grabs.
Ive been using Newtek h/w for frame grabs since the original Digi View 1.0
. Its come a long way but has multiplied in cost over 10 times…
Not much use for input 1 without a TBC, TV and lazerdisks work fine though.

The cost has multiplied by 10, but the ratio of NewTek solution cost to
industry cost has remained at like 10-1 or better! ;->
Those are all good ideas. For me though, if it comes down to hacking the
case or hacking the boards, I'll hack the case any time. The idea of
mounting a BNC on the bottom of the existing bracket is a good one. The way
the Toaster fits into the tower, the #1 input is inside. (Actually I found
the #2 hit the case, but only while the board was being installed.)
Anyway, you could make a short cable with a male BNC to plug into #1 and a
chassis mount BNC on the other end mounted below the bottom jack. I'm not
sure the extra connectors would be considered 'good practice'.

The best way is to make a bracket that has input 1 AND 2 on it and mount it
NEXT to the toaster in an unused spot. Works like a charm and doesn't
modify anything. –JG
That's an idea…. I'll keep it in mind when the next 3000T Toaster
installation comes up. We've got one of the local TV stations interested.
