#2091 compatible w/4000?

OK, folks, a quick question:
What version ROMs does a 2091 controller need to work in an A4000?
(I've got a rev 4.1 board, and the ROMs are v7.0. Is this adequate?)

Erik, You've got the latest ROMS. I know that at least 6.6 will work.

Just curious, before I start to anticipate trouble, is your 4000 serial
number much later than 3664? I'm not sure how to find REV & ROM number &
it's a 30 mile trip to vendor. I want to give him a running start when he
orders 2091 for me.

Exactly WHERE is the serial number? I've got a 22 digit # with a barcode,
and it ends in 6147… (I doubt they've sold 6006147..:^)
I just threw in my rev4.1 2091 (w v7.0 ROMs) card, and it came up just
fine….I plugged in the card, turned on the machine, and ran HDToolBox.
HDToolBox was smart enough to detect it as '2nd.scsi.device' and read it
just fine. I've currently only got a CD-ROM hooked up to it, but it seems
to work without any problems.
I've really got to hand it to C= for their integration on these later
machines. The 4000 is a surprisingly professional machine in design and
construction.

That is your serial # (the bar code) HK0006147 (the last 9 numbers). I had
a problem registering my machine since I couldn't find it either!
It looks like my machine is not close to yours in production #, & with my
luck I'll need all new insides <G>. Then comes the CD ROM & Tape drive
installation trauma; they didn't work with my 3000. I hope my local techie
can work the magic. I wish I had the nerve you guys have, tearing into a
$$$ machine!

Oh well, it seems that C= is willing to correct the mistakes on their old
boards at their cost – at least if you get something like a 4091
controller.
I just put a 2091 in my machine and it was a completely painless
operation. Plugged it in, and it showed up automagically when I ran
HDToolBox. Installation of the CD-ROM was equally easy, though I did have
to manually tell it to use the '2nd.scsi.device' instead of the default
'scsi.device'. I seriously doubt you'll have any prolems….(knock wood).
As for tearing into machines…I cut my teeth on bare-board appleIIs and
S-100 buss 8080's, so I've developed a sort of antagonistic relationship
with my machines. If they don't act up, I treat them right. If they start
giving me problems,…well, they better watch out! :^)

Just wait until you have to put a 5.25" CDROM drive in the drive bay, or
have to have most of the insides replaced to get a 4091 to work (which you
probably won't have to do). Yes, the 4000 does have some nice features,
but there are times I would like to punch out a CBM engineer or two 8^)

True, I _have_ heard horror stories of trying to install large 5.25"
devices like SyQuests & CD-ROMs. Fortunately, I don't have that problem.
There are some stupid things like the lone mouse connectors on the left
side, and the floppy drive that's only _slightly_ higher than the
keyboard, etc.
At least, I have a later model 4000, where some chips are socketed.
I was just comparing it to the 3000, where you basically had to eviscerate
it just to add RAM. RAM installation in a 4000 is very easy. A 'case' in
point: There were 5 screws holding the 3000 case on, & you had to remove
the mouse to get the case off – on the 4000, there are only 2 screws, and
you don't have to remove any connections. Even though it's nothing like a
Mac case, they have improved the case engineering in some key fields.
