#Can the Toaster…

I'm still trying to figure out which way I should go – 3D Studio on the IBM or the A4000 with the Toaster. If some of the Toaster users could help me out on some questions it would extremely help my purchasing decision. 1) In Babylon 5 lightning was animated. Is this easily done with Lightwave or was it created with another program? 2) Does the new version of Lightwave have a particle animation system? If so, can it animate things such as snow, rain, star field, fireworks, decintegration or spurt (volcano effect)? 3) Can Lightwave animate water effects? Such as small circular waves in a puddle or HUGE waves in an ocean? 4) Can someone please elaborate on what types of image/bump mapping Lightwave can do (ie cylindrical, spherical, what types of wraps?)? 5) Is it possible to create a scene in Lightwave and save it to a file. Then later, read the scene into Real 3D, create an animation file and read it BACK INTO lightwave. And finally, modify the animation in lightwave (maybe add lens flares and such) and create the animation in Lightwave? I'm comparing the Toaster to 3D Studio and some other programs on the Mac. I'm primarily looking for animation capabilities. Thanks Joe

Joe…. In answer to your questions: 1) There is no 'Lightning' button in LW, but it is easy enough to do with a image sequence map. 2) LW has particles, but it has no predefined effects. It is fairly easy to creat rain/snow. Starfields are a snap. Fireworks/desintegration and spurting can all be done with a little work. 3) LightWave can do water with either bump mapped ripples or displacement mapped waves. Both small circular waves and huge ocean waves are easily done. 4) Planar/Spherical/cylindrical/cubic/front projection image mapping are all available in surface color, specularity, diffuse, luminosity, reflection, transparency values as well as displacement and clip mapping. 5) A LightWave scene file is just an ASCII text file. If you can somehow turn it into a 3DS file, feel free. I haven't heard of anyone doing it yet. Hope this helps… JG

I made some cool lightning ( a jacob's ladder spark actually ) with a well subdivided tube and a fractal displacement map!

Great idea! JG

Joe, you might want to buy a copy of "The Amiga Gang" Video Tape from Jerry Hatchett. There's quite a bit of 3D Animation on it. This should help yer decision a bit. Not all was done with the Toaster But all was done on the Amiga.

Thanks for letting me know about "The Amiga Gang" video. Can you tell me where I can find it? Joe

I thought I DID tell you were to TRY to get the Amiga Gang Tape. You'll have to ask Jerry Hatchett here online if he has any copies left. He did the Compilation and Duplication of the footage a bunch of us submitted for our own enjoyment and to see what others were doing.
