#Rugged Amiga?
6 messages in this thread
I need to put an Amiga in a TV truck (to prepare TV titles and credits on
location). Does anyone know whether a standard floppy based Amiga is rugged
enough for this application. It would have to withstand being driven in a truck
over potholes (we are based in Boston <g>). Also, ideally, the main box should
be rack mounted. Has anyone done this? Does any third party produce a
"ruggedized" version of the standard Amiga? Would a 2000 survive OK?
I have seen pictures of 2000/Toaster rack mounted. If the box is mounted
well, it shouldn't have trouble.

Last time I was at Safe Harbor, I could swear I saw a case that looked
like a rack case for a 2000, you might try giving them a call. I am by no
way sure of this though, as I tend to be wrong quite often.

Mark,
I thought I saw an ad in Video Toaster User magazine from something that
will rack mount a 2000 case.

The Professional Video Chassis for the A-2000 @ $399.00
The PVC dupicates the orig case but offers an eleven gague steel front
panel that has the 19" standard rack faceplate. The PVC is also tapped on
the sides of the case for additional support in travel applications..

Richard, the local cable company (Comcast in Flint,MI) uses an Amiga 500
with a GVP hard drive in their truck. I'm not sure of the mounting
details. I seem to remember them saying they were going to mount it on a
board which set on foam blocks. These days, a 1200 would be a better
choice, since the HD mounts inside, and the graphics are much improved.
One of my other customers was looking at rack mounting the 1200. He
decided it would take more work than he wanted to do. The computer would
fit into a rack box, but it would have to slide out to get access to the
keyboard and floppy. The disk could be moved, but the keyboard would be
trickier. It uses one of those flat plastic printed cables, it doesn't
look like a 2000 style keyboard could be hacked in. There is a rack mount
kit for the 2000 though….
