#Project Portability
9 messages in this thread
Hi Folks,
Here's a suggestion for Version 3 to improve the portability of projects
and objects.
Back when I used Videoscape 3D I loved the way that it took the directory
in which a SET file was kept as being the base location for other files.
i.e. in Imagine terms, if a project called 'Cube' on DH1: has an object
listed in a staging file as `Objects/Cube.iob' then
`DH1:CUBE.imp/Objects/Cube.iob' is loaded. If the directory CUBE.imp was
moved to a different location, then Imagine would take `Objects/Cube.iob'
as being within the directory in that new location. Similarly with brushes
etc.
As a rule, all of my projects are in a logical assign calle `IM:' and so I
can move things about fairly simply, but I have seen a number of objects
with associated brushes, and complete projects uploaded, and working out
where everything goes is currently a bit of a nightmare.

Peter, I agree entirely. Impulse is looking at improving the portability of
files, but it hasn't made it into the 3.0 beta (yet). I'll remind them how
important that is, particularly with folks wanting to share files between the
Amiga and PC. –Rick
While we're on the subject of suggestions for version 3 how about a global
reflect map for the detail editor?
When you try to work with shiny objects with version 2 all you see if the
reflection of the quickrender background color. It would be nice if you
could specify an image to use as a reflect map so you wouldn't have to
drop out to the project editor to see how your chrome objects look.
In 3.0, each object will be able to have its own global reflection map assigned
in the Attributes requester. Thus, the problem is moot. –Rick
When you mentioned that in 3.0 each object can have its own global map, I
screamed outloud, YESSSSS!!!
Since 3.0 is in the BETA stages, don't you think it is time you spilled
the beans as far as features goes? :^)

I am only able to report on a few features which have already been mentioned
before: twist, taper and shear; brush tacking; particle animation; field
rendering; more interactive stage editor…. The list is much longer, but I
don't want to ruin all the fun. As soon as release is imminent, expect
detailed postings about the new features. –Rick Rodriguez
Rick,
Boy am I getting excited! Essence II on the way and Imagine 3.0 soon!
Which brings me to my question. Have you tryed any Essence textures in
3.0? Will they still work?

No, Paul, I haven't. I've asked Apex to contact Impulse several times and I
hope that they have. Essence is a terrific product and I hope that Steve and
Glenn are prepared to have it up and running as soon as the new software is
available for Amiga and PC. –Rick
Glad to hear aobut the global reflect maps in the new Attributes
requester. Was anything done about the way textures turn into an
un-recognizable mess when they're way off in the distance?
(I use edle=0 and render at 1280*800 then scale the image in ADPro for
final renders.)
