#Pouring beer from bottle

Dear all,
Does anybody have any hints on animating pouring beer from a bottle into a
glass? Any ideas greatly appreciated, I've got to do this tomorrow and my brain
is experiencing neuro-gridlock <g>.
Sounds like a rotoscoping job to me… or maybe you can borrow the
supercomputers down at USC for some fluid dynamics studies!

I've seen the WATER IPAS routine used, it animates a flowing/ rippling
effect on to the object. I'd check it out.

sounds interesting, although one minor problem, I don't have the water.sxp
<shucks>. The same type of effect may be possible with a bump map, with it's
co-ordinates set up the right way.

thank you for your kind and tongue-in-cheek suggestions <g>. The rotoscoping is
not in the budget, for sure. However, I just happen to have an
evaluation/loaner supercomputer handy in my spare bedroom that I was reviewing
for "Graphics Mutants Monthly" and may be able to use for the fluid dynamics –
NOT!
I was hoping for some enlightentment of the aapro and 3ds type – the final
output is only a piddly, little, 320×200 flic – as apposed to my more normal
70mm IMAX film output <g>.
Glad to hear that you're finally warming up the Cray. Time to pay that light
bill!

Gosh, the one time I'm actually serious about a project, nobody else wants to
be <g>.
FWIW and FYI, I finally used a variation on Jack's suggestion to great effect.
I used a thin rectangle shape, lofted with twists in it and mapping
co-ordinates on. I then made 2 more of the same thing, except with the shape
rotated 90 degrees each time before lofting. I then bent all of the three
twisted objects and morphed between them. In this way I was able to get the
twist to travel along the path giving the appearance of pulsating fluid pouring
out of the beer bottle and arcing down into the glass. Add a beer material and
an animated opacity map and the pouring part was complete. I then had to add a
seperate piece of geometry for the contents of the bottle complete with
animated opacity map to represent the diminishment of the contents. The final
touch was a piece of geometry for the beer in the glass, part beer and part
froth, which scaled up to fill the straight glass. Timing all of these
happenings was the hardest part, but it all came together today and the client
loved it! The final rendered resolution was 320×200, <chuckle>, and there is a
quarter screen 160×100 version and it will probably appear at some or all Black
Angus restaurants and other Sports bars etc. as a quarter screen overlay to
football games and such like.
This project certainly tested my powers of animation problem-solving <g>.

Lake Arrowhead (poor neighbour of Big Bear) was great. We had a fine time and I
got to do some lighting (spot following) for an ice show up there. How was your
holiday weekend?
Excellent! Good to hear you guys had fun. I'm sure you both were beat when you
got home, but Greg's party was a blast! First he had me bartending (one for
them, one for me; one for them, two for me <g>) but I finally escaped and we
all had a great time. His friends are very nice and watching the fireworks was
fun too.
So, were you handling a Super-Trooper carbon arc unit or what?

A what? Yeah, sure, well maybe. I just pointed it and pull a few levers at the
appropriate time, completely forget to read the label <g>. Good fun, though.
Kitty doesn't travel too well, I'm afraid! You'd know if it was carbon arc
'cause that sucker woulda' been hot! Usually has a cooling fan, too.

Why don't you model something like those phony, mechanical beer ads you see in
some bars. (Or at least _someone_ sees in some bars.) It's just an irregular,
clear plastic rod which they rotate to give the illusion that liquid is
pouring.
If you've never seen one, this probably makes no sense, and, frankly, I don't
want to attempt to document it in any greater detail. (I'm up to my chin in
tutorials as it is.)

Teehee. Actually, in "rehearsal" for the animation I had to pour a lot of beer
to examine the look of the "fluid dynamics". 'Course, I had to drink all that
beer too, rather than letting it go to waste <g>.

What color is beer exactly (RGB)? How do I get it to look like it does in
those
flashy beer commercials? I figure I mut use some kind of backlighting so the
background doesen't muddy up the color…I am modeling a yard glass full of
beer and havent spent too much time on the material for the beer yet…. Have
to get a little of that real life observation in…(gulp, gulp, gulp….) Have
you played aroud with a material for the head yet?

for the beer I used RGB 198,122,32; self-illum, transparency 25, transparency
falloff 50 (outside). The froth was white self-illum with a texture map of
ball.sxp amount 60, size 1, colour 1 RGB 231,237,165; colour 2 black. If I'd
had more time and this was more than just a quarter screen animation I would
have spent more time on the beer material and added some bubbles in the form of
an animated map. The froth however looked good from a distance.
Depends on what style of beer. Scottish Ales are redder, Porters are deep
red-brown, to yellow-dark brown, Stouts are near black, Straw for lagers and
wheat. I should know, I make ten gallons at a wack – all grain mash. Watch

🙂 Well, yes! I'm a Picobrewery, but a LARGE pico I assure you! I do all
grain ten gallon mash, recirculating step-infusion ten gallon batches. My
favorites are the wheat and fruit brews! Try Raspberries and wheat, or a
Raspberry Stout! Yummy! You have to let the fruit beer ferment longer in the
carbouy – like about other month because of the residual sugars. Else you wind
