A colleague who develops and distributes very large databases of technical
reference data asked me yesterday if any commercial DBMSs (e.g., dBASEn,
Paradox, Access, …) work with data stored on CDROMs.
Off hand, I don't know why they couldn't, although performance would
certainly be an issue with such long access times, but I don't have first
hand knowledge.
Can any one cite an example of such a system (or a counter argument to the
notion)?
There shouldn't be any problem using database (tables) on CD-ROM. You might
check out the dBASE forum (GO DBASE) and the Paradox forums and see if
anyone can offer you more details.
It shouldn't make a difference since all dBASE needs to know about is where
the data is located (full pathname).
Also you can have someone create a disc (1) for around $200 with 600+
megabytes of data in it. You can use this for testing purposes.
