To all: Has anyone heard if the next version of AAPro will support 24 bit color? Any ETA announced yet? Thanks, ->Jeff

All of us are with our fingers crossed. As usual, no Autodesk neither the Yost Group don't give any news about any future products/upgrades. There are just a "Suuurprise, surprise, surprise (Robin Willians voice here)" king of releases. However, with the all people here asking for 24bits support, I'm sure that next AniPro version will include 24bit frame by frame animation. Ana

Real 16 bit would be nice… Dr Dave Wyeknot inc

I think 16bit to be too low. I don't take care about real time animation so full 32bit non real time animation support will be great (specially knowing the relation between Jack and the Altamira composer. In other words: what about some "uses" of the alpha channel? <g> Ana

Its all subjective naturaly. Personaly what I have seen & done with 16 bit color leads me to think it's pretty darn good. when I was a kid 64 colors in a crayon box was the ultimate. 32k colors is pushing the limit of what gets on video tape, and elimiates restricted pale ette problems associated with 8 bits. but it sounds like your needs are different. Ana, David and ….. I don't think that 24 Bit animations in AAPro or in an other program are really possible. It's a problem of PC hardware. Not really the data transfer betwwen RAM and Video card, there are good posibillities via EISA or VLB, the small 64kByte memory VGA window is the problem. I had the chance to play a little bit with the Action Animator of TEMPRA tooooooo slow for real time animations in 24/16/15 bit. A good product is the F16 Player. Acectable speed for 15/16 bit animations (VESA 1.2 standard, I was really surprised), but the problem is the (memory) bank switching on the SVGA-Card. In some Animations you get "horizontal cross lines". At this time I tested it only at an ISA ET4000 15bit graphiccard and I hope it will be better with VLB. At my opinion, 15/16 Bit Animations have a very good chance for the next AAPro release (Jim/Gary, I hope it will come soon after 3DS3), but not 24 bits. Ingo

Ingo, Real-time playback in 24-bit may still be some time away, but if we could just create 24-bit flics then we could record frame-by-frame now. When the hardware catches up and we can actually play 24-bit in realtime then I'll be happy.

I'm with you on this Martin. DT

I am really happy too !!

Ingo, From the beginning when I talk with other guys in the forum or the Yost Group about 24 bits for AApro I'm always talking about NON-REAL time. of course I know what is needed for real time broadcast quality 24 bits animation: five pentiums in parallel and PCI bus <G>. However, what I am asking for is an animation editing program with frame by frame animation, video capabilities, real support for Targa+ boards, alpha channes "Altamira style" support, painting capabilities… and hundreds more things. You know a cross between Painter and a classic animation desk+ a video post like module. And add some 2d morphing if you want to! <g> BTW, I would like to see and improvement in the frame by frame animation (blue friend). With 32 bits support, we will be able to see the last three or four frames like a soft transparency. This will transform animator in a true classic animation platform (fingers crossed <g>) Ana ps. Regarding 64Kbytes memory VGA window…mmh, I'm not an expert, but some boards are currently using linear memory (i.e. ATIs boards). The Targa+ also use a linear memory scheme when running Windows (which speeds video operations only up to 15%), so it's supposed that this can be done in Animator as well. Hey, tech experts! Is this correct?

>>BTW, I would like to see and improvement in the frame by frame animation (blue friend). With 32 bits support, we will be able to see the last three or four frames like a soft transparency<< Ana – This would be terrific! I asked for something similar months ago. I hope they (Autodesk) responds to the suggestion. The little Disney animation package has this ability. I have always found the TWEEN function in AAP, with the green and blue solid colors mostly useless, except for outlines or stick figures, which I mostly don't work in. David Taffet

Personally, I have this 32 bits/multi-transparency-frames FIRST in my wish/dreamlist <g> Also think on the posibilities of multilayer support for an 2d cel animation program (including focusing capabilities to each layer like in a multiplane camera! arghh, NEED IT! 🙂 I know that AnimatorPro is aimed to business users and presentations, but please, why not split the line and make a "powerpoint" like program for business and an animator pro for the true animation artwork? I think that some of us are looking for cheap classic animation since the beginning. I'm sure that there is a BIG market for this. Wacom pressure sensitive support is second in the list, along with many other things that some of us had asked for in the past. Well, let's get our fingers crossed! <g> Ana

Hups Ana, sorry, sometimes I read so fast that I overread some details ( I'm not so good as Martin Foster <g> )…. I'm kidding, you are right you talk about frame by frame recording. For peolple who needs/works video output, such a tools is absolutly nescessary. I know THE system for you <g>. Quantels HENRY. I saw it last weekend when I was by a german TV station in order to help them a litlle in 3DS. Really cool. You can edit 15 Minutes video in broadcast quality online! in realtime in RAM or ultra fast harddisks, I don't know, with all features you can imagine. You can rent this system for 1k$/hour or just buy it for 1Million$. ( no <g>!!). Take a look at such a system if you have the chance. Another possibillity for you at this time is TURBO ANIMATOR from Tempra. Sometimes I play around with this PC programm by a friend. 24 Bit, VCR, Painting… For my opinion tooo slow and not enough comfort. I think the price is 1k$ but I am not sure. GO GraphAVend for more information. BTW, did you get enough infos about my DAT(Sound<g>) card from me ? >>>Regarding 64Kbytes memory VGA window…mmh,<<< I only talk about standart VGA cards. I read some stuff about linear adressing Video cards with VLB, but is there already a standart for programers like VESA ? Where are the tech experts ? Ingo

Most recent SVGA cards use linear addressing, not only VLB cards. As I have said before, the Targa+ has linear addressing capability (currently only use it with its Windows driver -correct me if I'm wrong with this one). I like animator since the old 320×200 version. In fact, the first program that introduces me in computer animation for the independent user. I have an special emotional link with this program <g>. Regarding Turbo Animator, I've recieved too much critics to Tempra products, but I'll take a look in the GraphAVen forum (most critics come from Martin "I'm everywhere, anytime" Foster <G> and other experienced users, so all of them are very well "backgrounded" and always turn on the red warning light when reading about Tempra products 🙂 Now you say some little bad things about it, so more points to the black list <g>. Anyway, I've never play with any of their programs. I'll take that look to the graphics vendors forum. Ana ps. yes! Thanks for all the info about the DAT. It's well saved and waiting for possible future references.

FYI, Jim Kent is now an employee working directly for the Autodesk Multimedia Division… The Yost Group is now responsible only for the 3DS code stream. (At this point, I really can't handle anything more than 3DS.) – G

Ingo – For your information: Autodesk has taken over handling Animator, including hiring one of (or THE) programmer(s), for the future. The Yost group is mostly out of the loop, now. David Taffet
