#AppleCDSC/AHA1542C work!
5 messages in this thread
Just a note to those considering hooking up their Apple brand CD drives to a
x86 system.
My Apple CDSC and my Adaptec 1542C work just fine in my ISA 486. I'm using the
EZ-SCSI software that came with the Adaptec card.
My thanks to Chuck Roman and Steven Lee who earlier shared their experiences.

PS: I later noticed that some SCSI cards come bundled with CORREL-SCSI. That
could be another way to go.

Just curious – could I hook up an Apple CD 300 to a x86 with the
Adaptec card and then hook up either an magneto-optical drive or a bernoulli
drive to the Apple? I am looking to have both a removable storage device and a
CD ROM that I can switch back and forth between my 386/25 (soon to be 486/66)
at work and my IIci at home. Thanks.

Lou,
I was acutally going to mention that as my next move. I just didn't want to
confuse my posting.
SCSI is cool. The ability to have one port out the back of your computer that
can accept several devices chained together is way cool. I have been waiting
for the x86 guys to clue to this for a while. I'd love to have a notebook with
scsi. You could easily hook it up to a large disk, a cd, a tape drive and the
rest while at home – and download what you need to the internal drive what you
need for the road. (I think Leading Edge makes the only SCSI notebook.)
Anyway back to swaping peripherals. Yeah, you can. The only penalty is that
you can't have them connected to the x86 and the Mac at the same time.
I would buy each device as a "Mac peripheral", and thus get Mac drivers and
utilities. I would then use something like the EZ-SCSI that comes with an
Adaptec, or what looks like an excellent product from Corel (Corel SCSI) to
hook up the same peripheral to the x86.

jOHN…You may be aware but there are SCSI interfaces that hook up to a
parallel port allowing use on a laptop. I have connected CD drives and hard
drives to my Gateway laptop using the Trantor T348 interface. You're right,
it's quite cool. Be seeing you.

I was wondering if you or anyone could comment on my proposed setup.
1) I have decided on buying the Apple 300 CD-ROM, which uses a SONY mechanism,
because the price from Apple has been slashed and the drive gets good reviews.
I am told that that drive works fine with the Adaptec card on the x86 machines
( ihave been discussing it with many people – it may have even been you who
told me). I have a 386/25 mHz at work now, soon to be upgraded to a 486dx2/50,
50 or 66.
2) I want to hook up a magneto-optical drive to that one, probably a 128 Mb
Fujitsu based mechanism. My only worry is that I was told that the SCSI card
that I would need for a Bernoulli transportable 150 would not be good enough
for the M-O drive, and I am wondering if the Adaptec card could handle both a
Apple CD300 and a M-O drive. The other possibility was that I was being sold a
cheap ($49) SCSI card by the person who wanted to sell me the Bernoulli (I
think he called it a Stealth).
3) Can I leave the SCSI card in the x86 machine, and only hook up the drive
when I want to use it, or do I have to re-install the card each time I use it?
Can I leave the driver software in there, or does that have to be reinstalled
each time? Since I am primarily Mac based, these questions never xcome up,
because the Mac simply ignores things if they are not there.
Thanks for all your help.
