#Best CD-ROM titles

Right on – I have a bunch of CD ROMs and the latest children's material is
awesome – if a bit awkward in their use of MPC specs and the Windows interface
(Grandma and Me isn't quite window-able). These (Grandma and Arthurs) plus
Mixed Up Mother Goose have to be in any best of the best list. I haven't heard
of Manhole – what is it about …. I think there's a huge market for CDs
which challenge and develop children's curiosity. My money is waiting ….
Do you put Mixed Up Mother Goose in the same class with Grandma and Arthur? I
haven't seen it yet, but if you consider it to be as good as those two, which
are superb, I will rush right out and get it. And what about Amanda Stories?
Is that a good one? And the Discis Kids Can Read series?
I don't mind that kids' stuff doesn't follow Windows conventions as long as
they run well *from* Windows, which MPC Grandma and Arthur of course do. In
fact, I consider their format preferable because they clear the screen of
distractions.
Manhole is a sort of freeform exploration… anything you click on leads you to
another screen… down a manhole, up a beanstalk, through a castle, through a
sunken ship, etc. It's very good, and the music is extremely good.
It was originally done for the Mac; it was one of the first if not the first
of its kind. It has just recently been updated and rereleased by Activision.
It has both DOS and Windows versions on the same disk. I got it at Egghead
last week on sale for $29. Recommended.
