Hi,
I have a problem which I hope someone can help me with. Here is the
configuration:
486/50 16 MB ram IDE controller, 1 disk Adaptec 1542B SCSI host adapter
Segate ST1480N Internal SCSI Disk Drive
Wangtec 5150 External SCSI Tape Drive
NEC CDR-25 External SCSI CD-ROM Drive
The SCSI chain "looks like" this:
Segate–Adaptec–Wangtec–NEC The Segate and the NEC have terminating
resistors, the others do not.
The above works fine. However if I remove the Wangtec then the Adaptec fails to
find ANY devices atached to it.
If I remove the WangTec and the NEC drive, the Adaptec finds the disk. I have
done some experimentation. Here are the results:
SCSI chain:
Segate–Adaptec–Wangtec–NEC, works as expected SCSI chain:
Segate–Adaptec–Wangtec, works as expected SCSI chain:
Segate–Adaptec, works as expected SCSI chain:
Segate–Adaptec–NEC, no SCSI devices found SCSI chain:
Adaptec–NEC, no SCSI devices found SCSI chain:
Adaptec–Wangtec, Does not find Device 0 (expected)
From OS/2 Wangtec is accessible SCSI
chain:
Adaptec–Wangtec–NEC, Does not find Device 0 (expected)
From OS/2 Wangtec is
accessible, NEC is not
In all cases the terminating resistors were set properly. The SCSI ids are:
Segate=0, Adaptec=7, Wangtec=2, NEC=1. I tried changing the NEC id to a few
different values in some of the above configurations, it had no effect.
Can anybody tell me what is going on?
How do I get the Adaptec to recognize ALL attached devices, under all
configurations?
Any and all help greatfully accepted.

Jorge, I can't help you with your problem – it sure looks to me like you've
done everything right in your basic setup – but I do have a sympathetic comment
and follow-on question. I have a system very much like yours, same Adaptec,
same Wangtec, same NEC, and I have problems mainly with the tape drive. Most
frequent, though inconsistant problem is the system simply not realizing that
the tape drive is present. It's like the cable isn't connected or something,
but of course it is. Sometimes (maybe 30% of the time) it works, most time it
doesn't. Reboots, shutting the sytem down to "cool off" (?), odd things cure
the problem. Since its intermittant and not logical, no one can help me. Also
have other problems when I do get the Wantec to work. Sometimes it
spontaneously aborts a back-up, then cant find the drive again, sometimes I get
an error saying no EOF in the final file, wierd stuff. Sooo, I hear ya but I
can't help ya. But if anyone else does here, or if you solve your problems
elsewhere, I'd sure like to hear what trick fixed things for you.

Steve, I used to have problems similar to yours. I don't know excatly which of
the following actions fixed the problem, but here is what I did:
Open up the Wangtec, make sure the internal cables are properly connected.
[A [AUnder DOS (NOT OS/2) use the switch on ASPI4DOS that has it report all
attached devices.
Be sure your fans are working on both the Wangtec and on your Power supply
Retension any "old" tapes that you use.
Be sure that you only have terminating resitors at the end of the chains.
Be sure the you have terminating resitors at both ens of the chain.
All of the above was about a year ago, before I had the NEC and before I moved
to OS/2.
Also be sure that the heads are clean on the tape drive.
Does your NEC work if the WANGTEC isn't attached? This seems to be my problem.
I took the NEC to work and hooked it up to a SCO UNIX PC with a BUSTEC EISA
SCSI. The BUSTEC would'nt come up with the NEC attached.
The chain was like this (INternal DISK–BUSTEC–NEC).
HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE os (sorry about the caps) the host adaptor can't
seem to deal with that model NEC, at least when its the only external device.

Jorge, I've tried all of the things you suggest – terminations are correct,
heads are clean, tapes are tense (G) – but thanks for the thoughts. I haven't
tried juggling the order of things on the bus because the particular physical
arrangements inside the box are quite constrained, so options there are limited
(non-existant). I'll be watching for other feedback as well. Thanks again.
