#drive not ready

HELP
toshiba 3401b with Future Domain compatible scci card (also Rodime disk).
fdcd.sys + mscdex (from MSDOS 6) appear to load correctly. The drive can be
accessed but on attempting to read the disk results in "Drive not Ready"
message.
This only occurs if the drivers are loaded with a CD in the drive. Loading with
an empty drive results in corect operation. No differences are detected by
loading drivers high or low.
Anybody know the whys etc.

Stephen,
Try slowing down the Boot process by using the DOS 6 single step boot, you also
may want to pause before loading MSCDEX. it might be that the player/driver is
not fully initialized before the drivers try to test for it.
Does your problem occur on CTL-ALT-DEL restarts or only on power-up?

Glen, Hello
I have tried your ideas, single stepping the config.sys & pausing Autoexec.bat.
The problem still occurs. The "drive not ready" occurs on startup, hard reset &
the C-A-Del sequence.
I have removed the HD from the chain in desperation & the problem dissapears.
The single stepping would appear to rule out any software interference.
