#TOSHIBA 3401B
7 messages in this thread
I want to purchase a TOSHIBA XM-3401B Internal. I have found a place
in New Jersey that in addition to selling hard drives & tape back-up units,
sells this CD-ROM drive for $419. While on one of the CompuServe Forums (can't
remember which one) I came across a message that WARNED about the fact that
SOME DEALERS are selling XM-3401 <–<(NO "B") AS
XM-3401B………AND……to stay away from the "B's" that were made BEFORE
APRIL 1993.
I went "into" the TOSHIBA+ Forum and left a message but the Sysop told
me that the Forum was NOT for "drive" or "storage" media info.
PLEASE HELP ME and if you have ANY information about this PLEASE
CONTACT ME through this Forum OR my E-MAIL (C'Serve #71573,2554).
I also want to purchase an ADAPTEC 1542C controller with this Toahiba.
$259 w/"drivers" or $199 "bare board"!

Wendell, if you find any info re the Toshiba 3401 B, I would like to know. I am
thinking of buying a Procom CD-ROM bundle thru Tiger SOftware which includes
the 3401 although they call it the Procom modem.
Hello Ed;
About an hour ago I received (via U.P.S.-C.O.D.) my new TOSHIBA
XM-3401B (internal) CD-ROM DRIVE. I wanted to make sure it was a "new" unit
and not a "return" , "refurb." or "re-pack" before I left a message on this
Forum telling you and everyone else just where to get one for only $429.00
(plus shipping)!
It IS BRAND NEW with a manufacture date of "JUNE 1993" on the S/N tag. It was
packed very well in lots of "solid" foam rubber. I would certainly advise
anyone interested in a NEW TOSHIBA XM-3401B CD-ROM DRIVE to contact PAUL

if he's busy!)
AND……TELL PAUL THAT WENDELL REDER from WEN-TECH
in
Huntington, Connecticut RECOMMENDED HIM !!!! You
will be assured
of getting the XM-3401B for $429.00 <———<

I'm not sure what the difference is between the 3401 and the 3401B, but the
'B's made before April I do know something about. Toshiba had a firmware
problem where with multiple devices on the bus, if a drive tried to reconnect
when another device already had the bus the drive would go to Never, Never
land.
This isn't a problem when the drive is the only device on the SCSI bus. Also,
if you're running DOS it shouldn't be a problem unless you have some special
drivers which do async I/O.

I called Toshiba in Irvine CA about this (714-583-3000) they tell me the
XM-3401TA and XM-3401B are the same drive. It's the 3401 designation tthat
matters most. The extensions, per the tech I spoke to, has to do with how the
drives are shipped. The 3401b drives are single pack drives (I.E. consumer
products with individual sets of documentation, et. al.) The 3401TA are
multiple pack drives orginally produced for OEM packages for outfits who
package the drives and sell them as their own. Sometimes the mail order channel
picks up extra OEM drives and sells them to consumers. Expect to get a xerox
copy of the documentation and such like with a drive like this.
Otherwise the drives should be identical.
By the way, the $419 price you got is good, but not the best I've seen mail
order. Try Megamedia or MPS Multimedia (who will tell you the price is higher
but match any lower price.) See Computer Shopper and CD-ROM Today for their
ads.
Hope this helps, BOB
I was reading your reply and saw you mentioned "CDROM Today". Is that a
newspaper or magazine? Any information, price, address would be appreciated.
Thanks…John Freeman.
John, CD-ROM Today is a magazine. A nice one at that, although I think all the
CD-ROM magazines are a little soft in their reviews. They're so busy pitching
the technology they forget we, the readers, count on a little serious
criticism.
My little tirade over, I can still say I recommend it. Price is $3.95 single
issue. Published by GP Publications. The first issue was July/Summer 1993. I
suspect the July/Summer stuff means it's a bi-monthly. Their address is PG BOX
51478, Boulder Colo. 80323-1478. Actually, as I'm reading the subscription card
I realize it is bi-monthly. A one year subscription is $14.95 (6 issues).
