#CD-ROM development kits

I work for a typesetting company that may be doing our first CD-ROM product
this year. I'm interested in any information on vendors offering CD-ROM
development kits, and any experiences you have have had with those kits. Also,
suggested references, hardware (CD-ROM writers) information etc. would be
appreciated. I have downloaded the files CDDRIV.TXT and MFG.TXT (not read them
yet).
We have lots of experience with Editorial development, UNIX, MAC and DOS, so
book production and programming is not an issue. Just the newness of doing a
CD-ROM.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "CDROM development kit." There are lots of
ways to make a CDROM, for a number of purposes. Could you expand on what you
have in mind? My company offers what may be the broadest range of CDROM

Ach! By CDROM development kit I mean the software/C libraries etc. to create a
CDROM. We have to book on-line in a tagged format already. What we want, is to
convert it into an electronic book with hyperlinked case studies, on-line forms
(its a tax preparation book), and so on.
I have seen reference to CDROM development kits before. Actually, I've heard
of such a thing, but have not seen the literature. They should include the
reader software distributed with the CD.

OK. I'm going to assume you are working on an IBM-compatible system, right?
It would make a difference what kinds of tags you've used, and what format your
documents exist in now. I might be able to help you if I knew more about the
details. If you'll email or call me we could discuss this in greater depth
without getting too commercial on a user forum, or you could come over to the
CD-ROM Vendors Forum in our section (#6). Vendor's forums are a bit freer with
respect to some kinds of discussions.

A very expensive but complete API is made by Sony called FTR. Although they
have an API for the Mac, their emphasis is on Windows. They say the API is
mainly for large book publishers (hence the price SRP ~12K) but all the users
that have worked it is say its excellent.
It can support indexed retrieval of all forms of media but it is only a
development kit. Contact Sony Electronic Publishing for more info.

There's a product from Microsoft called "Multimedia viewer" which apparently
compiles documents into an indexed, hypertext-linked application with searching
capabilities, etc.
I haven't used it, but it looks pretty good. Version 2.0 just released, $495
list.
