While shopping for a mail-order PC, Gateway told me that double-speed CD-ROM
drives (NEC Multispin 84i, etc) are not presently any faster/better than
standard units as current software/hardware cannot utilize higher speed
transfer rates. Is this true? Were I to specify a NEC Multispin84i in a ZEOS
4DX2-66, is there anything I should make sure to specify in addition, such as
interfaces. I'd like to use the unit with sound and graphics, so I wouldn't
want to miss anything…

Beep! That answer is incorrect, do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Double speed drives are indeed faster than their single speed counterparts (at
least SCSI ones are). You might have to be using a higher end adapter to see a
big difference, but its definitely there.
