We bought an NEC CDR-84J Drive 280MS 300KB XFER 63K Buffer from Insight.
This drive within five months began intermittently running at high speed
without a command so that it vibrated the computer case. We had it installed in
a Tangent (IBM Compatible) 386 20MHz. We would be in Word Perfect DOS or Word
Perfect Windows and suddenly the machine would start whirling in a run away
manner. The CD ROM was not running in the background or on a multitasking
basis. We are operating with 8MB RAM and DOS 6.0. Has anyone else had this
problem?
Furthermore, we called NEC and they said Insight (Hard Drives
International) was responsible. On an RAM we returned the drive to Insight and
now seven weeks later Isight says they cannot get NEC to replace or repair the
drive. Has anyone else had this problem?
We are in the market for two (2) CD ROM Drives and would like to have a
280MS 300KB drive. One will be installed in a Compaq 486-25 and the other in a
DELL 486-50 tower. Will be interested in your experiences. What about the
Toshiba TXM-3401-E or the Sony CDU-561?
