CBM/ATARI Stocks
44 messages in this thread
I never thought I would see this:
Atari stock price is over Commodore's… Just checked and CBU
is at 2.750 and ATC is at 2.875. Just 2 months ago Atari was worth less than
1.00 but since the announcement of the vapor Jaguar (RISC, 32-bit, 16.8 mil
colors, DSP, for less than $200)…yeah right….their stock has gone up. I
just don't feel good about the future of Commodore. I see chapter 11 coming.
That could be good or bad….but probably bad. Oh well….
Todd,
Hi. Why does it surprise you that Atari's stock has risen over
Commodore's? They're both similarly mismanaged companies. In a thread here
a few weeks ago, some people were talking about CBM competing with Apple
and IBM. When I suggested that CBM is not in the same league as those
companies and that they should worry more about Atari than about Apple and
IBM, some people laughed at me and said Atari was dead.
Well if Atari is dead, then I guess the latest stock prices mean that
Commodore is deader. Who's laughing now? 😎

Actually, the prices of Atari and Amiga stock are a meaningless
comparison of the two companies. There could be 1 million shares of Atari
and 10 million shares of Commodore (just for example) and the equal prices
would mean that Commodore was worth 10 times Atari. Last figures I saw on
Atari indicated a sales rate that is about 10% of Commodore's current rate
of sales. This could change radically however, with the new Atari/IBM
"partnership".
Clint <Chaocity>
Clint,
I'm not really comparing the companies, but just reflecting that
Atari's stock is now worth more per share than CBM's. And that Atari's
stock has been rising and CBM's falling. It indicates a trend.

With the Atari/IBM alliance, I would expect their stock to rise.
Probably a pretty good bargain right now, actually. I suspect that it will
take something of that nature to get Commodore back on its feet again
quickly. <sigh> Actually, I don't have any "favorites" between the
companies, I just want the Amiga to survive and prosper. <grin>

Clint:
What sort of alliance is there between Atari & IBM? (I must have missed
something!)

Mike:
It was in the paper (business section) early last week, something
about IBM building the Jaguar for Atari and providing something like $200
million in funding. It's somewhere in a stack of papers about 2 feet
thick. <grin> I'll try to search it out tomorrow and find the real
details. I saw the article in both the San Francisco Chronicle and our
local Santa Maria paper, so I figured that everyone had heard about it.
Clint <Chaocity>
The "alliance" Atari has with IBM consists of IBM's No. Carolina plant
to manufacture and distribute the Jaguar. They are also responsible for
quality control. This seems like a fantastic move on the part of Atari!
I'm sure you've read the specs on the system. It is supposed to be
released before Christmas in the New York area and then (after they've
made a few bucks) widely throughout the country. It sounds pretty good
although I haven't heard anything about software yet.
Mike:
I found one of the articles, Associated Press in Wednesday's paper.
States that Atari Corp is contracting with IBM to produce 64 bit Jaguar
system. It's a 30 month agreement under which the machines will be built
at an IBM facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Jaguar will retail
for around $200 and an optional CD-ROM drive will be another $200. Details
of the partnership were not disclosed. Apparently the actual announcement
was made jointly on last Monday.
Clint <Chaocity>
Clint:
If it's specs are true, it sounds like a system I'm gonna have to get!

If enough programmers get behind it any write/port games, then it
will succeed, but if they hang back waiting to see if it will succeed,
then it won't. Software is becoming a driving force behind the success of
hardware.
Clint <Chaocity>
Clint:
Software is BECOMING the driving force? I thought that it was for a while
now, witness the HUGE success of the Amiga, with all of it's big name
software availability! 🙁

Todd,
Why is it that when Atari has a new machine comming out, their stock goes
up. But with all the rumors floating around about the Amiga 5000,
Commodore stock goes down?
Tom:
Atari announced the Jaguar, Commodore has not made any such
announcement about the 5000. One is a planned product which may or may not
ever make it to market, the other is just a rumor which may have no
substance behind it at all. People will gamble more readily on an
announcement than on a rumor (though rumors have been known to push stocks
in one direction or another).
Clint <Chaocity>
The reason Atari's stock went up like it did was the announcement that IBM
would build the Jaguar. Atari's stock price didn't move that much (like a
point, maybe a point and a half) when Jaguar was first announced.
You can get that information by typing GO SECURITIES, and requesting daily
quotes information.
The 5000 April fool's joke has been going around for months now, so I doubt
that has much to do with anything either.
I've been hearing about the Jaguar for about 6 months now. I'd love to see one
of those things when it's out. I just hope they keep going on the Lynx, 'cause
I love the one I have.
Steve
Steve,
Thanks for the info.
It looks like Atari could have a hit on its hands. Especially with IBM
there to help fund the beast. Atari users have somthing to get excited
about.
As for Commodore it looks bad. Layoffs, losses, loss of software support.
Do you think it's possible that if Commodore stocks go low enough some
company like SONY might go for it?
I can't imagine any other way out of this mess.
Thomas
No other way out? Sure there is… Commodore could end up doing the same
thing Atari did: a partnership with another company. Anything is
possible… Who would have guessed that IBM would be building stuff for
Atari?
The real question I have is this: What good will become of Commodore and
Atari making game consoles? I mean, what good for people that own Amigas
and STs? At Atari, game consoles are a completely different division, so
I'm not sure how or if strong Jaguar sales will help the computer lines.
I think that it's likely that profits from the CD32 or any new technology
we see there will be put back into the Amiga line.
Anyway, I'm not really worried yet. Commodore is suffering the same way
that the rest of the industry is now. To quote from "Monty Python and the
Holy Grail": "I'm not dead!" 🙂
Yes..
hearing about Apple laying off all them people makes me feel better
already.:)
Thomas
Tom,
A local Computer Newspaper here in Chicago says that Apple will soon be
releasing PC's with an Intel 486 inside. They say the code name is
Houdini. Supposedly, you will be able to run Windoze or System 7 at a flip
of a switch.
<sarcastic amazement> Oh Boy!
-Louis
On AUTOPILOT
Louis,
Windoze or system 7 at the flip of a switch?
Anybody can do that!
But can it run Amiga Dos?
<no, no, never>:)
Thomas
No, but an Amiga can run Windows, System/7, and AmigaDOS, as we all
know… 🙂
Perhaps C= should get into the same act, And I've heard about Emplants
being bundled with 4000's in Europe. Could be a good selling point here
if they iron out all the Emplant inconsistencies.

My Emplant runs like a champ! No inconsistencies in my setup.

Unfortunately, not everyone has your luck, but I'mm going to buy one when
the 1200 version comes out.

Steve,
BTW, did you know that the software for the Lynx is developed on …
the AMIGA?
Source: Combo (Commodore's own Mailbox in Frankfurt). They have a list of
applications the Amiga is used for. If someone is interested, I'd
translate it into English and upload it somewhere hereabouts…

I knew that Lynx software was developed on the Amiga, however, I would be
interested to see the list!
Bob Comer — Cruising the nets on AutoPilot from Cheyenne, Wyoming
Yes, I knew that. As a matter of fact, some of the members of the
original Amiga team created the Lynx!
Steve
The "…some of the members of the original Amiga team [that] created the
Lynx…" are now with 3DO.
BTW, in case no one noticed, check CBU stock. Someone is buying rather
heavily. As of this hour transactions are at 430k (about 300k higher than
daily activity over the last 3-4 weeks) and the stock is up 3/4.
-sja
I noticed that too. The stock was already up 3/4 by mid-morning. It
would be interesting to see how the distribution activity was throughout
the day.
Steve

boy, this Amiga team is sure getting around….

Steve, I don't think that sales number represents real buying. More likely it
is short sellers closing out their positions. A couple of investor advisories
recommended shorting C= when it was 5 and change in June.
Rob,
That could be — however, if that were the case I'd expect that the daily
activity level wouldn't have peak on a given day — but would have been more
evenly spread out over the week.
I will refrain from making cynical comments on the action in C='s stock and
offer you the "dead cat" theory. That is, dropped from high enough, even a dead
cat will bounce. 🙂
Well, the dead cat bounced a bit higher today.
Steve,
The cats not dead until you look in the box.

Chris,
Love to see that list!

I have a Lynx also and I think it's fantastic! Atari has put software
for Lynx on the back burner while they concentrate on the Jaguar but the
Lynx beats what I've seen of the competition hands down.
A new game called "Battle Wheels" is just out for the Lynx. Connect up to
six players. If you have any friends that own a Lynx, be sure to play
some of the head-to-head games. It brings a whole new dimension to the
game!
Steve
I saw Battle Wheels briefly at an Atari Show here in Connecticut. (Why
can't I find an AMIGA show in Connecticut??!!) It looked like a lot of
fun. There were 6 kids all hooked up together running each other over! I
have heard Warbirds is also great when com-linked.
I've played Warbirds Lynx-ed together. Another great game.
