Hi Louis, I'm considering purchase of OplVsn and would like to get some user input. Do you use Imag2.0 with it? If so, does Imag display directly thru OplVsn so that you see your rendering? I would be installing OplVsn in an A3000 w/2mg chip/4mg fast, 100mg HD and using a 1950 monitor. Any comments, recommendations would be appreciated. One more Q….. will the standard Imag2.0 work with OV or do I need to get the special one I've seen in the OplVsn advertisements? Thanks abunch! Chris J.——>on AP

Chris, Yes I use Imagine2.0 with the OpalVision board, at home. The version of Imagine2.0 that was sent to me originally by Impulse was suppose to display images using the OV board. It didn't. Found some other small bugs and Impulse was kind enough to send me a fix. Again, this is the OpalVision version of Imagine2.0. It's exactly the same thing exept instead of the "use Firecracker" gadget you have the "use OpalVision" gadget. The fix did finally render and display using OV. I wasn't quite happy with the resolutions in the config file so I changed them and renamed them. Since then, I haven't been able to get it to display anything on OV. I'm sure it's something on my part. Also, "sometimes" after I do a quick render, it won't show it. Just asks me if I want to delete the file. I've never run into any problems using the non-OpalVision version of Imagine2.0, 'cept for an ocassional slice here and there. Yes, the standard Imagine2.0 works just fine, of course you can't use the OV board with it. I'm thinking of going back to that version myself. I really don't know why anyone would want to "see" what they're rendering, while they're rendering. I usually render a few very lo-res few keyframes before comitting to a full render. My board is installed on a A3000 with 2 chip and 8 fast. Runs great! Installation took about a minute. Fired it up and the rest was history. For me, OpalPaint was a dream come true… 🙂 BTW, I have an archive with some recent info on the Video Processor along with some screen shots. The interface design for the VP doesn't impress me. It's not as "clean" as OpalPaint. I don't know, maybe it's the choice of colors. But anyway there are some effects this switcher does that I didn't know were possible on an Amiga…… -Louis On AUTOPILOT

Thanks Louis, So, as I understand it……. the OV version of Imag has a bunch of prefernc's that are changed, yes? BTW, what are you using for a monitor setup? I've heard it is preferable to have 2 displays. Chris J.——>on AP

Louis, "I really don't know why anyone would want to 'see' what they're rendering, while they're rendering." To be honest, this is why I was so enthusiastic with the used Firecracker24 I picked up earlier this year! When doing a Quickrender, I don't have to wait for the darn thing to finish before checking if my attributes have come out right. I can usually tell whether the render is good or not after 20% of the image has been drawn. This can be a major timesaver when fiddling around with parameters, and cannot really be approximated by reducing the resolution to 1/4. Blaq!

Charles, Good point. In my case, I just render out a full size frame from the detail editor before putting it in the stage editor. -Louis On AUTOPILOT

Chris, The Opal(ized) version of Imagine 2.0 has a few bugs that supposedly is in the process of being fixed (I wouldn't hold my breath). It appears as though this version was thrown together rather quickly with several mistakes appearing in the Imagine.config file itself. I rewrote the .config file (with the proper screen resolutions) and uploaded it to the Opalvision BBS. As Louis mentioned, there is a problem where the QuickRender screen sometimes doesn't appear. This problem is intermittent and there are several variables that must be met in order for the quickrendered image to appear. As you may know, Imagine has user definable buttons at the bottom of the screen. I have also found that if you try QuickRendering by using one of these buttons, the QuickRender screen will NEVER appear (as opposed to being intermittent). Before Centaur began shipping their Opal(ized) Imagine, they created an Imagine Patch for their OpalHotKey program (included with OpalVision) for use with the original Imagine 2.0. I have found that using this patch in conjunction with a user defined button (to QuickRender) on the Opal(ized) version performs flawlessly (99% of the time) and still gives me the option of the "Use Opalvision" button in the Project Editor. OK, so if you're not using Imagine yet, this may not all make sense to you, but bottom line is – Yes, Imagine 2.0 will directly use the OplVsn board (either with or without the Opal(ized) version). If you have any problems with it, I'd be more than happy to help (either here or on the OpalVision BBS). Alan Henry – Digital Plastic F100-PW-200 Inside

Alan, Thanks for the info. Yes, I do have Imag2.0. Don't have OplVsn as yet, I'm consider'n buy'n it…… The Retina bd has caught my attention also, have you played with it at all? I've been kinda hang'n back wait'n on the OV modules to appear, before I melt some more plastic (g). Also, I've given thought to not upgrad'n my A3000, but just get a beefed up 1200 for rendering Imag stuff. Just too many choices and not enough $$$$. Chris J.——>on AP
