Your session seems to be going well. I am particularly interested in the
dynamics of the Group Presentation segments. Given the success of the Show and
Tell from previous years our hope is that the changes this year will prove to
be very successful. By to-day, Thursday, your final presentations will have
been given, so I look forward to the comments.
Re your questions:
Questions:
1) Does anybody know if you can grab text right off the AutoCAD Text Screen
and place it in the Clipboard? Or do you have to use the LOG file, then open
the LOG file in Notepad to grab it?
Answer: I agree with BillE
2) We had a couple of machines that got "WATCOM Win386 Read error" when we
tried to load AME for Roger's Day2 Theme Project. Had to completely exit
Windows and reload to fix it. What causes this?
Answer; Thats what I call a "shoulder shrugger", ie I don't know and can't make
a good guess. Suggest you get a program partner to post a message on the
Windows forum and see if anyone responds. This illustrates a good use of CIS.
3) What's the ATC price for AutoSolid/AutoMill?
Answer: List for Manufacturing Expert and / or Design Expert is approximately
15,000. I assume the 10% of list will be close to the ATC price.
4) Weren't all attendees from last year's PPTs supposed to get copies of the
"final product" of the exercises and pedagogical guides, to be shipped later
when finished?
Answer: All attendees at this years session will receive final product of the
Learning Resource Series.

The Group Presentations went better than I expected, mostly because I didn't
know WHAT to expect. The 3 groups responded well, and I have sent documents to
Milt showing what they came up with, with the limited time to prepare, and the
limited knowledge of the tools. One group prepared a really neat graphic, using
Paintbrush, AutoCAD, and MS Draw (in WinWord) to detail graphically the
differences between the 4 OLE commands on the AutoCAD Edit pull-down (Copy
Image, Copy Vectors, Copy Embed, and Copy Link). I'm assuming Milt will
distribute, but I can send you the WinWord file(s) if you want.
A suggestion for the schedule is to not attempt the Group Presentation prep
time on Tuesday, as we ran out of time with your exercises and the Theme
Project. We decided to prepare Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, then present
on Friday morning, since the DCL exercise got removed from the schedule on
Friday. Worked well for us.
OLE, Clipboard and the Cardfile topics were very successful, cause everybody
could easily see the application to their day-to-day work, and could adjust
their teaching methods accordingy. DDE was a little tougher for folks to grasp,
though. Excel did OK, but nobody here had ever used it before (or ANY
spreadsheet, for that matter), so they felt a little overwhelmed. Most saw it
as a programmer's avenue to develop more applications on, which I believe it
is.
I have marked up a copy of each of the materials with edits, and mailed to
Milt. He'll have to decide what to try to get done, and what will have to wait
for the final printed version as Learning Resource Series.
Overall, the session went well. Tuesday was a real eye-opener for some folks,
as they hadn't even seen Windows (except for Solitaire), so many were getting
lost in Window "panes" (pun intended!). We found real quick that our machines
will in fact handle 3 simultaneous AutoCAD sessions, as folks kept starting
another one instead of switching back to their first session. I found the Task
Manager very helpful for showing what was going on and switching to other
applications. Alt-Tab was useful, but hard for some to remember.
By Wednesday, we were "Windowing" along happily, and everybody had learned a
whole new group of terms: icon, minimize, maximize, iconize, swap file,
wallpaper, desktop, control panel, etc.
A full report is on it's way to Milt, along with completed evaluations.

THERE you are! Glad to hear from you. Sorry I missed your calls. I didn't get
any message on my voice mail, so I assumed you hadn't called.
A big envelope of stuff went in this morning's mail 2-day Express Mail to you,
containing all evaluations, Group Presentation docs, and markups of Phil's and
Roger's documents. Much of the markups came from the group, as I found it nice
to do a exercise, then stop and say "Ok, what did you think?".
Hope you're having a pleasant weekend. Hope your absense means you're off with
the family somewhere. We need to talk early next week about CAD Camp plans.

MILT, KEN, ALL…
Need help on this one…..
Been trying to print from a acadwin render window to a postscript device.
…been O.K. when I do it local but not over my Novell 3.11 network.
What is funny is that when I plot a drawing to a file in acadwin and
nprint it to my que everthing is fine.
ANY SUGGESTIONS!!!

Hmmm….. I also have a Postscript laser hanging from my server, running
Novell 3.11. We did quite a few prints to it during PPT class from AVE Render,
so it can be done.
My first guess is that your Timeout setting in either the PrintJob
configuration or on the Capture line is too short. I'll need more information
to go any further: what exactly happens when you print? If you're getting
"slices" of your prints on multiple pages, then increase this value. When you
NPRINT, there's no pause while the server is waiting for AVE to catchup, so it
doesn"t "time out" and dump whatever is in the queue.
I can get you the exact settings I use for my PrintJob config, if this doesn't
help.
