Vibrant drivers for the Diamond Speedstar 24X work great! Install was 10 mins. The manual has very complete discussions for configuring for 3DS r1 and r2. Vibrant either has 3DS, had someone test it for them or both – the writeup [which is several pages] leaves nothing to chance, and even includes hints on which resolutions to choose for the main, materials, and rendering screen. Like…not overkilling the materials editor with too many colors, etc. Also, the drivers have better fonts [I think] that it automatically selects for each screen, based on your choices. The install will also modify your DOS boot files, as well as 3DS.SET, if you want, with the correct statements. I highly recommend these drivers, especially if you've been waiting around for months, like I did, for the correct Diamond/Panacea drivers. BTW…where are those darn Panacea drivers, anyway! They were supposed to be out LAST month… Eli.

Eli: So… you can render in 24bit color with the Vibrant drivers? C#

Craig, Yes. You can render at 16.7M colors at 640×480 which I think is pretty good for a relatively inexpensive video setup. In fact, rendering is a bit faster because 3DS doesn't have to do that "Computing Colors" step to reduce the pallette. Installing the Vibrant drivers also patches something in the 3DS code to make the Materials Editor behave correctly. I'm not sure whether the Diamond/Panacea drivers do this – whenever I tried anything but VGA, my system would reboot when launching into the Materials Editor. So, understandably, I'm VERY happy that little problem has gone away an I can now see 24bit renders – much easier to make adjustments to photorealistic scenes when they at least look more real! Eli.

Eli, >> my system would reboot when I went into the material editor Did you have an ATI Ultra? I had the same problem until I did the following: 1) in the 3DS.SET file, set the materials editor for RCPADI (make sure the semi-colon is gone) 2) delete the 3ds.cfg file 3) reconfigure the system That cleared it up with my system. I still get a reboot of the system when I try to view an .FLI file while the VVESA.COM is loaded though. Ang

Ang, The video adapter I have is a Diamond Speedstar 24x. All seems o.k. for the moment and I'm enjoying 3DS much more now that the renders are 24bit! Eli.
