I do believe the 120M-HD in my 4000 is trying to tell me its ill and
wants to become a boat anchor… At times the right top and rear of the
case become so hot you can't hold your hand on it..
If I open the case the the power supply and HD feel equally hot, the fan
blows in the right direction…
I have had to reformat the drive two or three times for checksom errors.
At times from a cold boot I get the the screen requesting the WB disk, a
reboot then brings the unit on line.
Now today if I have to do a reboot I get a plain jane cli screen which
does nothing. If I shut the machine off, wait a few minutes and turn it
back on, it boots normally..
I checked the drive with QB-Tools, all blocks and files are ok..
Any ideas or suggestions ??

I live in a freezing studio to keep my 4000 happy. She would just stop med
stream & lock up, you sound like you have the same problem. There seems to
be a 4000 illness. Keep her iced <G>.

My overheating prob comes and goes. I normally never shut down and the
4000 will sit there for weeks at at time and all of a sudden it will heat
up. Shut if off till it cools down, turn it back on and it might be a day
or a month before it heats up again. I think I should start calling gold
service, my dealer hasn't been much help..
I think I found the cause of my warm boot prob, 2091Turbo, a utilities
program to help the 2091 scsi board work faster in the 4000. I removed it
and I'm able to reboot….

I wish I could never shut down, but we get wicked lightening storms here
in the coountry & I fear for Ami's insides.
Good luck with Gold Service. All they will do is bring a new machine. so
if you are able to subtract & add mem. & boards you're in luck. I didn't
want to use a new 4000 as a learning experience!

I know about BIG boomers, I live just outside Dallas, Tx and there are
times when not only do I have to shut down, I have to unplug everything.
Right now I have a laser disk player that needs to go to the shop because
I missed pulling the plug..
As to Gold Service I'm on my second 4000, the first one lasted a week and
as to going inside, as long as I don't have to use a hot iron, I'm ok.
In fact the other day I added a Toshiba 3401 external cd-rom drive and
while talking to Asimware, I mentioned that it was internally terminated
and that it was a pain as my tape drive was also. I was advised that all I
had to do was open the case and flip a dip switch and that would take care
of the prob. Now all I have to find out is which dip switch it is and like
I said to the guy, you have to learn, it can be fun at times..

I'm on my 4th 4000! 2 died in the shop as my techie spoke to me on the
phone. (I'll be in NYC soon so I'll con him into "inside Ami 101"). So far
this one has behaved except for the heat problem which the AC seems to
fix. VERY BIG boomer last night in beautiful NC & took your name in vain
as I ran to the studio to pull the plugs…running all the time indeeed
<G>.
I have a Toshiba 3201 external & tape drive, fortunately externally
terminated, easy to get to, though I could get neither to run on my 3000.
Are you using a C= 4091 SCSI? I just got one, so I will have to open Ami &
check her insides for the right Buster & motherboard. It always
something.

Sun night was a busy night for me because of boomers in Raleigh, I work
for a major airline and I'm responsible for the flt crews along the east
coast….
When I called my (direct)dealer a few weeks ago to try and purchase the
4091 he advd they wern't available yet. He was shocked to learn that I
could get the card mail order and even more shocked when I told him I knew
of a card for sale second hand…
He told me I have no use for the card as my drives aren't scsi-II.
Actually I'm glad I didn't order the card, I hated the thought of paying
for the card and then waiting for C= to ship the new MB. I have found out
that I don't need to buy the card in order to qualify for the new MB. One
of the members of our local club called gold service and within a couple
of weeks he had the MB replaced….

Then you really know about the NC weather conditions.
My guy in NY seemed to think why not get the latest & be prepared. We'll
see. At least I'm ready for SCSI II <g>. I'll check out the MB problem. I
am isolated here, but will be in NYC in 2 wks & will get all the C= info
from my super techies.
