#IBM 3101 Emulation

Does anybody know of a program for the Amiga that will allow it to
emulate an IBM 3101 terminal? I have Diga! but can't figure how to write my
own emulation even with their instructions. Any help or advise will be
appreciated.

Funny you should ask, Rocco. I have a friend who works at IBM, just bought an
Amiga 2000 and got rid of his 3101 home terminal. Then he had a great deal of
difficulty accessing the IBM mainframe until he used Matt Dillon's DME program.
He wrote a command file which he says does a pretty good job of 3101 emulation.
The main problem he has now is lack of type-ahead buffering – I think the
system hangs if you try to type ahead of the prompts from the host. If you are
interested, reply back and I'll talk to him about uploading the command file.
You'll also need to get DME, which I'm sure is in the Telecomm DL here.

I am not sure why you would want to emulate an IBM 3101 terminal on your
Amiga (unless you want to access PVM that is). While I never written a 3101
emulation for Diga! I have a lot of experience writing host device drivers for
the 3101 and am willing to help answer any questions that you might have on
that or most other async terminals. Drop me a line with your questions (via
EMAIL) anytime.

Steve, would you be willing to help my friend with this as well? He needs 3101
emulation to communicate with the IBM at work (sorry, I have no idea what
system/protocol/product IBM is using there), and the logon procedure offers
only two choices – 3101 or "IBM PC-YT". As I said to Rocco, he has achieved
partial success using DTerm. My feeling was that he should be able to convince
the system operators to install a more generic option to the terminal software,
but then I am totally unfamiliar with IBM and their big systems.

Dillon, what I really meant to say was that you need "DTerm". I got
temporarily confused – they are both written by Matt Dillon, but DME is a text
editor whereas DTerm is the terminal emulator. I see you also got an offer of
help from someone more knowledgable about the 3101. Good luck with it.
