About the heating thing <g> 4 P5-90's will -definitely- produce a
decent chunk of heat, with less power besides!
Reminds me: At an engineering firm I once worked at, we got specs on
the systems for a computer room that we were adding A/C to. One company listed
their server as releasing 8000btu's of heat, all while humming away
cheerfully… took two weeks to get the "company's engineers" to repeal that
figure.
Sounds like their server needed it's own dedicated A/C unit by their "engineer"
calculations. Must have had heat sinks the size of television sets to pump out
that kind of heat, I wonder if they were made of titanium.
CPU's had to be cryptonite.
As a matter of fact, the CPU was a mechanical interpretation of a
RS4000. It spun a wheel (made of lead) around a bar (made of steel) with no
lubrication. If the wheel clicked the casing, it was a 1, if not, a 0. The
machine's speed was clocked in RPM rather than Mhz, and this old beast clocked
40,000,000 RPM… if you didn't turn it off every ten minutes the steel bar
would melt…
We're trying to sell the design to Intel for the P6!
Come up with a Guwie Interface Kit (GIT) and Apple will buy it! …(g)…

We've got a large computer room in the main computer facility where I work. It
has two Crays, a couple of Vax clusters, a couple of Amdahl mainframes and a
whole lot of other stuff. A sizable fraction of the heat generated by the
systems gets used to heat the rest of the building in the winter.
There is a big UPS system to keep the systems up long enough to get them shut
down in an orderly manner when the power goes off. I've been told that, since
the UPS can't power the air conditioners, the computer room gets close to 120
degrees F before they get the last of the machines turned off.

We do over prep a room for computer use. Such a room as you
described, were it presented to us for a project, would wind up with
a large chunk of A/C… probably larger than the "architects" or
project managers would guess. My point was that this one server (and
it was but a lowly, 350w. P/S, 486/DX-33 w/2 gig H.D.) would have put
out about as much heat as your computer room.
I understand – I've been through the mill in attempting to estimate the heat
load of a room full of instruments so they can figure out how much AC to put
in.
The computer room that I mentioned is **BIG** – about two stories high and a
couple of hundred feet long.

The big problem, with a room like that for example, is that if you turn
off the computers for a rainy weekend, <not that you would, but if you did> the
coil on the 30 ft. long A/C unit would freeze up solid and break… thus
incurring a lot of costs.
But, I'm the computer guy, not the A/C guy… that's their
problem!
Yeah, I know somebody whose computer room sprung a small water leak under the
raised flooring and their under floor air conditioner turned it into a very
large iceberg! I think that they ended up drilling a small hole in the floor to
let the water out…
