Convertable objects

Anybody know if there's a way to save a LW object that keeps the center of rotation used in a scene? I'm trying to make some stuff that can be readily converted to other formats, and I understand that scene files aren't so translatable. Basically, I have a parent object and want the child to be able to rotate about a fixed point on the parent that is not at the origion (0,0,0). In LW, you make the child with the center of rotation at it's origion, or move the center in the scene. I take it that this is not how it is done for other systems, 'tho. I guess what I'm asking is what do I need to do to have a related set of objects saved from Lightwave so that they can be used in formats like AutoCad and such? Does any of the conversion software handle this well? Thanks for any help. Nate. He's Back!, stuck on WinCIM, but Personally Editing just fine, thanks.

InterChange will load and save LightWave scenes. But it sounds like you want to be able to save the scene to a file format like DXF that doesn't have a 'scene' file format. I've thought about adding this option, where a hierarchy would be saved as separate objects displaced to their absolute scene locations. It's not present or possible in InterChange at this time.

Does 3D STudio have a sorta SCENE format? I ask because most of the 3D Studio models I've converted had Axis titled Light1 Light2 Camera1 etc etc Thanx John. Hows the new 3D ROM coming along? Still going to be done in time for SIGGRAPH?

What do you mean, "sorta scene format"? The .3DS file contains everything: models, motions, material definitions, key frames, etc. everything short of the bitmaps for material mappings. I sure hope the new 3DROM will be ready in time for the show. 🙂

Oh, goodie. Maybe you could do Mickey Mouse, too, and then we'd violate the marks of some really big companies. Sorry! I'm going to try to avoid models that cross the line of Lucas, Disney, Spielburg, etc.

Oh well, I guess I'll upload the Toon oriented models to Amigaarts then. Can ya tell me if you are going to use the Gumby Model I sent ya on the 3D ROM? If not I'll upload that to Amigaarts too. Thanx

Don't forget, you are free to do with your models what you will, including the ones on the 3D-ROM. We asked for *non-exclusive* permission to redistribute them.

John, Thanks for the info. I guess I'll just have to supply a text file describing the positions needed for the objects to be moved to. Being unfamiliar with anything byt LW stuff, I wasn't sure. regards, Nate.
