No blame…. I was just recalling….. I couldn't remember who it was.
It was an extremely nice invitation.
I was noticing the increasing amount of people inquiring about
contracts, legal issues, marketing, advertising, pricing, etc. and
the thoughts of a seperate forum popped up again. I thought it would
be interesting to do it. You don't happen to still have an open area
do you?
I still feel that managing contracts, negotiating deals, setting up
long term agreements, etc. are worthy topics to put into a seperate
area. As to whether or not it should be here is definately open to
debate.

Currently we have one open section. There have been requests to split
the take-5/want ads into 2 sections. There's a slight association
between want-ads and farming/contracts so maybe that makes sense and
the one message/library section could accomodate both
want-ads/farming/contracts. I posted the possibility last week and we
received about a dozen responces. I imagine that there is a lot of
interest in downloading example contracts but how many contributors
of contracts will we have? I'm still a little confused as to what the
"farming" aspect would be. Would individuals discuss the pros/cons
of being subcontractors or will individuals solicit for
subcontractors and how is that different from the current want-ads?
Everything you mentioned has alot of merit. Quite frankly I'm
indifferent to whether or not the forum needs another area to
specifically address these concepts. They could easily be discussed
in any area that a person saw fit to bring them up.
I do believe that the aspect of building, maintaining and planning a
company's growth are totally unrelated to installing a graphics card
or discussing using a matte. I also feel that there are obviously
people on the forum who are doing so well that they wouldn't benefit
from reading threads relating to contractual matters or structuring
projects, while others are probably happy just maintaining their
current position. That's why I was trying to find out who had
originally said that there was an open section in another forum. (It
turned out to be Evan)
We carry on quite a bit of e-mail traffic discussing everything from
negotiating with various typs of clients, to the advantages of
incorporating. All of these topics have special twists for the
animation market. Additionally legal issues surrounding the
animation/graphics market are constantly changing, it's all very
interesting to a number of people and would probably bore a large
number of others. It would be intresting to be able to have a section
some where to discuss such topics and also be able to maintain a list
of people who were in the section.
Please don't take my ramblings as a call for another section or a
change to the current structure of the forum. I'm just following up
to a few e-mail and land-line conversations and testing the waters
for interest.

Supporting a list, I think, would require treating the section as
closed and then maintaining the list. Closed forums have a limited
list length. This forum has a 31K+ membership and even if 5% signed
up for the section, I think it would exceed the maximum list length.
Evan may know the details of implementing this much better than I.

Thanks for the info. We'll see what happens.
There must be some way of exchanging info and aiding the 3DS community
without possibly creating more competition by having non-3DS users to
freely access a section specifically oriented towards fostering 3DS
based companies. ( Of course this is all speculation)
Let's see if anyone else is interested. I still have a spare section
or two, but would not want to go to the work of flagging a bunch of
people for membership if everyone was apathetic to the idea.

I have been following the thread on stating a new section about
"farming/contracts" and wanted to tell you and Jonas that I could really
benefit from a section with this kind of information. And as I grow as a
company, I then would contribute as well.
Please consider this, since it would be of great benefit to all here,
experienced or not.

I think it would be quite an interesting forum, as long as it doesn't
degenerate to a lot of begging and groveling for work. I'd love to have a
place to talk about contractual, marketing, and other issues, and a place to
find and give out work.
