David, If you only have the SQL server driver, you have nothing at all. This driver's only purpose in life is to act as a liaison between your app and a running copy of SQL Server. So this is not really a good choice for a standalone app. As I said, we are using Watcom for single user apps. Other options are to dispense with ODBC and use an ISAM library, or wait for the (undoubtably) much better flat file MS ODBC drivers that are coming out somewhere round 3Q94. -Ronald-

Jan, No, I don't have any solid info at all at the moment. It does seem that the beta will be reasonably wide, so you might want to take your chances and apply. My only guess as to why the new drivers will be much better is that MS made the decision to completely scrap the current drivers. Since MS bought the Simba drivers outright (i.e. they don't have to pay a per copy license), I can only presume the current drivers are being scrapped for technical reasons. -Ronald-

Ronald, The beta will be underway Real Soon Now, and is supposed to be narrow and fast. If someone intends to lean on the drivers and provide good feedback and can communicate those facts to the appropriate parties, they might have a good chance of getting in even though it's a bit late in the cycle. -Dale South Wind Design

There is a white paper over in WinEXT about the Access Jet Engine 2.0. It talks briefly about ODBC. The new ODBC driver is supposed to use the full Jet Engine instead of a subset as 1.0 did. It also talks about the index structure and support for optimal index selection. It's a good thing to read. You can also apply for the beta by faxing a request to Microsoft Beta Services at (206) 936-7329. I might add that I sent in my request a month ago, and still have not received any verification.

Can you recommend a good/cheap/win32 compatible ISAM library?
