I just downloaded the Golfm.gif image from one of the libraries however
I can't get the mapping coordinates correct. Can anyone who is familiar with
this map be of help?

I don't know. I just found it in the What's New Library.
Wasn't me, Jonas. Lessee, coulda' been ChristianV…or maybe JKJ…..hmmm I
think I remember those guys doing golf ball maps but not too sure. Anyone out
there remember who UL'ed that file?

I think Christian Vagnati uploaded that map as a reply to a thread about
mapping golf balls and basketballs some time ago. If you like I will give
him a call today and either give him your phone # (didn't we talk about a
pig mesh?) or have him log on ASAP. He is not a regular but he does have
an account.
PS If this is his golf ball bump map it was created specifically to be
applied with spherical mapping cords. That was the simplistic beauty of it.

Thanks for your help. I didn't really need the pig, but I do need this.
The results I have gotten using sperical coordinates have not been correct.
There must be a trick. I would be very interested in talking to Christian.

I just caught a piece of this thread (no golf ball from here, Alan
<g>), but if you are trying to make maps that look good when applied
spherically to spheres, there is sort of a trick. Not really a
trick, just some coordinate transformation from a spherical system to
a planar system.
I uploaded a soccer ball mesh & map once upon a time (SOCCER.ZIP) that
had a text file included that told how I made the map. The map was
not extremely high-resolution but I think it illustrates the point.
Basically, you have to build the map warped so that it becomes
unwarped when applied spherically, sort of like the flat maps of the
earth that show Greenland way out of proportion. (It helps to be
warped make these maps!)
If this might help you and it's not still in the libraries, let me
know and I'll email it to you. If I've totally misinterpreted what
you were looking for, then, nevermind… <g>

PS, I don't think it would take a rocket scientist to make a program
that let you paint directly on a sphere. I heard a rumor of such a
thing being worked on once. Maybe in my spare time… (What I
really want is an IPAS routine that will let me graphically drag
mapping coordinates around on the surface of an object – talk about
warping maps!)

Hey big Al, no sorrow necessary! I think a golf ball would be harder than a
soccer ball. Now where's that "paint directly on the mesh" software? <g>

Hi David.
I did upload that file sometime ago. Actually I do not remenber
exactly which one I uploaded, I have modified it about a douzen
times. In any case try this if it does not work email me.
I think that bump map is only 1/4 on the X axis, so make sure that
when you apply the shperical mapping to the object you use tiling Y=1
and X=4. That should do the trick.
As I said earlier feel free to contact me if it's not right.
And yes it will be nice to get an IPAS to do the job.(The really cool think
will be to get an IPAS that create the geometry of a golf ball, soccer ball…
instead of a bumpmap)
