hi there i need some help with my default settings of 3dsr3. i want to make background rescale "on" the default setting upon starting 3ds. i also want to make TARGA 752×480 the default rendering mode in the keyframer. i have already set the 3ds.set to have one of the res.buttons in the renderer to show the 752×480 resolution. what i dont know how to set is the targa default file format and 752×480 default res. in the keyframer so that i dont have to set these parameters everytime i enter 3ds. i just cant find the relevant lines in the 3ds.set file to set the above parameters. if you can help, please drop me a note. thanks in advance ara

Ara, << what i dont know how to set is the targa default file format and 752×480 default res. in the keyframer so that i dont have to set these parameters everytime i enter 3ds. >> One simple way to accomplish this is to: 1. F4 (keyframer) 2. File-New 3. Render-Render View 4. Configure….. 5. Select Targa, and 752×480, OK 6. Render 7. "Render to screen only?", Cancel 8. File-Save Project. \3ds3\projects\3ds.prj 9. quit 3ds 10 Enter 3ds Done. Each time that you enter 3ds/keyframer it will assume Targa and 752×480. jonas[adesk]

Hello, when you display a bitmap on the shaper (to trace something over) if you zoom in, the bitmap remains the same and when you zoom out you have lost the position of your shape. Is there any way to rescale the bitmap or lock them together? Thanks for your continuous help.

Arturo, << Is there any way to rescale the bitmap or lock them together? >> To over come this and to get better resolution in the shaper, some individuals break up the original bitmap into smaller pieces and then create one object from the pieces. jonas[adesk]

.. break up the original bitmap into smaller pieces .. and then use the shaper to trace these smaller pieces. This is the same as being scaled into the bitmap. Having traced all of the pieces and created them as objects in the editor…create one object from the pieces.

Arturo, as you have noticed, when you zoom in on geometery in the shaper, the backround proxy image stays the same. What I usually do is first enable the scroll lock, and then Save the Current view (under the Views menu). Make sure your backround consists of ONLY the areas which you would like to trace, keeping detail level high. If you need to zoom in to tweak a vertex, go ahead and when you are done, do a Views/Restore Saved to bring you back to the original view you started the tracing in. Hope this helps, -Alan Iglesias

752×480 is a non standard targa+ mode. I don't think you can get this to work. You might try tmode 25 which is 756x486x16 bit but this in NOT 24 bit color. As far as 3DS coming on with the right setup, you can set this in the 3DS.set file and then you don't have to type in the resolution each time, just select the correct box. BTW the standard resolution for the targa+ is 512X486x24 bit. 752×480 is a PAR resolution. Since I use a targa+, a PAR and a Fats VM, I have my four configurations set for 320X240 (for speed tests), 640×480 for the FAST VM, 512×486 for the targa+, and 752×480 for the PAR. All have their appropriate aspect ratios as well set up in the 3DS set file. The problem with using the 3ds.prj approach is it isn't a true default but a project specific setting.

don: the main reason i want tochange the default is for PAR. i have removed my targa32+ from my computer. i dont find it important to have this card anymore. i have already set the res button in 3ds.set to show 752×480, and targa as default file format in keyframer. the problem is that 3ds.set does not allow 753×480 to be the default res upon starup. i have to manually set this button. i was just wondering if there is a way of making that res the default res. thanks a lot take car ara

The next line, I believe, after the button sets in your 3ds.set will set the default resolution. Just make sure that you save your 3ds.prj with the proper settings. It took me a while to figure out that my 3ds.prj file was overriding my default settings. Try that out and tell me if it works. Andrew

i will do right now and let you know what happens. thanks ara

ndrew Sinagra 75010,747 (X) andrew: i checked the next line in 3ds.set. this line sets the default res. for the null render mode. it wont alter the targa render default res. i did what joans at adeskand you offered with prj file. it works perfect. i started 3ds and set all the parameters as i like them and then saved that file as 3ds.prj in the projects directory. it works perfectly. thanks for the input. take care ara

The 3DS.prj is the only way I know then. Should be OK as long as you develop your *.prj from *.3ds that were originated from 3DS started with 3DS.prj. Did that make sense? <BG> I find it curious that you are able to replace the targa+ with the PAR. I elected to keep both because there are some things I could not do with the PAR that I can with the targa+. Test render the materials editor and port out to Dos prompt for two reasons. Quick targa dos display of files for a third. I could go on but I have to move on. Good luck with your PAR and, hang onto that targa+, you may want to reinstall it too. 🙂

don: i have already converted all my old project files to the new settings. i loaded them and changed the settings and saved them. this took care of that problem. all my new projects ofcourse will be saved with the new setting. as far as targa+ board, i really dont find any use for it. the only potential use is for outputting to a single frame recorder, which i dont plan to do any more. as far as mat editor output, the viberant driver and viper pci give me 24bit out put on my display screen. also i have a few differant browsing programs that allowm me to brows targa files very quikly in windows or 3ds. as far as targa deticated programs(hires qfx) i find that many windows programs are as powerful and as easy if not easier to use. i just dont see what the targa board could do for me that i cannot achive otherwise. by removing my targa board i now have an extra slot fore a network card(all my slots were full with the targa in there). also i dont have to worry about all the memmory address problems assosiated with targa boards and other devices. in any case i realize that everyone has differant needs and they should setup their system accordingly. i tend to be a supporter of simplicity and find that my new setup offers me the simmplest solution to my needs with the minimum of compromise. thanks for your input. take care ara

But Ara, the difference in gamma, refresh rate, and color bandwidth between a computer monitor and a video monitor make it pretty hard to rely on what you see on a computer monitor for exacting work for video. I only use my computer monitor as a user interface. Anything that ends up on video gets created solely using feedback from a video monitor. John Tissavary (LUNA cie)

that is very true. that is one of the compromises i have accepted. if i need to check video color integrity i simply render tha object in question to par while i am working on the material. also i have adjusted monitor settings so that more or less i get a relitivly good represemtation of my image on the display monitor. then i do my fine tuning on par. it is not as straight forward as dumping to a targa framebuffer but i find it a conviniant tradeoff. any ways thanks for your input take care ara

To each his own! I find I use the targa+ all the time for test renderings and since I develop 99% of my own materials I NEED the targa+ to test render the cubes and spheres in the mat edit. The memory address is really no conflict and I too have my targa+ machine full (all 8 slotts) Actually I have 4 DX66's and only 3 slots open in the system including one machine that has a 12 slot MB. Guess you'd say I don't believe in simplicity. <BG>

don: wow thats some seriouse system. well i still own my targa+32. if some day i feel that it is becoming a handicap not to have the t32 in the system, i will plug it back in. i think when i can afford 4 computers networked, in some magical way, out of my control my view over whats simple and whats not might change<G>. take care ara
