Dale;
Do you have any more info on Primestar, such as an address or phone
number? Would appreciate such input?
Thanks;
Hank
I'm sure when John Chang gets back he'd be happy to provide some info. If
he uploaded Scala's press releases (rather than just posting them), you'll
be able to download them. They don't mention the details of Primestar or
what it is.

I seem to have missed the beginning of the thread, so forgive me, but:
What does Primestar have to do with Amigas? The only Primestar I'm familiar
with is a small-dish satellite service run by TCI. I don't subscribe (I have
the misfortune of being on one of their cable franchises), so are they using
Amiga graphics for something?
Primestar has nothing to do with Amigas but a lot to do with Scala.

OK, now I'm confused. I thought Scala was an Amiga product.
Scala is a company, not a product. Scala MM300 and WhatChaMaChannel
(sorry, I forget the proper name) are Amiga products, as are all of the
Scala products which preceded them. If you read Scala's press releases,
you see that they are working on an operating system for multimedia and on
a project with Primestar. The clear implications of those press releases,
if not the actual statement (I don't remember whether they come right out
and say it) is that Scala multimedia products may be available on a
variety of platforms as needed, including in a Primestar set top box.

Dale you said and I quote, "WhatChaMaChannel"
Its InfoChannel… but, I kinda like what you called it. ;-}

P.S. I'll prep all the press releases thus far and upload to the library.
Jim,
Primestar is a limited partnership entity that provides direct-to-home
Satellite service. They are the first service to incorporate a completely
digital broadcast distribution system, utilizing General Instrument's
DigiCipher (TM) technology.
Instead of using an 8 ft. diameter receiving dish, the Primestar dish will only
need to be 18" in diameter. Since the signal is digital, most of the problems
associated with satellite reception is eliminated. Primestar plans to offer
more than 70 channels in 1994, and in excess of 150 channels in 1996.

John,
Can you get me on the mailing list of Primestar? I may be interested
in one of those 18" digital dish set-ups. Are they available now?
If not can you send me an address (preferable CIS or Internet) to
request info?

Be aware that the new digital technology will not be ready until next year.
Right now, Primestar is distributing content digitally, however,
satellite-to-home is still currently the C-band analog stuff. Scala will make
announcments when appropriate.

Hang on here… I've seen the Primestar commercials on TV lately, but the
local TCI franchises have been offering it for a year or so. It uses what
looks like a 4-foot dish. I've heard of the 18" dishes coming this fall, but
they're not TCI or Primestar.
RCA is test-marketing its' Digital Satellite System with 18" dish here in
Little Rock, Arkansas as well as Jackson, MS and one other area
(Shreveport, LA?) Of the 10 to 20 units each store in our area received
to sell, I understand most have been sold. The picture quality looks
very, very good from the demo I watched. I would much rather spend $699
for DSS (plus monthly programming fee) and own the system than to pay
(what I was told) a $300 installation fee for a Primestar-type service
just to rent it (PLUS monthly programming fee.) Look out cable!

Hey, I'm in Arkansas! I'm in the East End Community, just south of Little
Rock. I believe a local BBS (Ferret Face) is using an 18" disk for
receiving net mail/messages through satelite.

Jim,
Ah nuts! I got the Primestar/GI dish and the RCA DirecTV dish mixed up.
DirecTV's dish is 18".

Hank,
GO NEWSGRID and use PRIMESTAR as the keyword of your search, at least
one of the articles should give you an 800 #, and I am pretty sure there
will be more than one article, even though I haven't checked.

Matt,
I wasn't able to find anything on Primestar per your instructions: GO
NEWSGRID and using Primestar as the keyword of the search. Do you have
any other information regarding this system?
