Well, even though I got no responses I thought I would report in on my success.
I discovered that my Supra fax modem was (for some unknown reason)
communicating with my friends Mac at 1200, even though we both had set up our
respective computers at 2400. I then checked my CI$ billing to see if I had
been having similar problems with CI$. Lo and behold, it turns out that I've
been comunicating with CI$ at 1200 baud also, even though I have my AT3 phone
book set up for 2400 baud (I mainly use it for reading messages and such, so
hadn't really noticed that the transmission was slow–although I should have).
Anyway, I hooked up my old Supra 2400 modem which has been collecting dust for
the last two years (if you knew about my housecleaning, you'd know that was
true). Voila, it worked like a charm, and we had no problems transferring
files.
Has anyone else had a similar problem with a Supra (the slower, cheaper of the
two) fax/modem?

I only had a problem communicating at high speeds while my phone lines
were defective. Once they fixed the lines here, I've been communicating
at 9600 baud with no problems whatsoever.

Try resetting the NovRam in the modem. Give it the command AT&F2&w&w1 then
give it a try..

thanks for the information. I'll give it a try when I'm back home at my
computer. I'll let you know if it worked.

I think your suggestion worked! At least visually, it seems as if the screens
are scrolling back considereably faster. The real test will be the next time I
download something from the SIG. Between timing how long it takes to download
and checking out what the CI$ connect charges are, I'll be able to tell if this
was the cure.

I use the SupraFax 14,400. For the most part I have had no problems
connecting to CIS & other BBSs using the init string AT&F2E0. When I find
that I am not getting a connect, I try AT&F and set my baud rate to a slow
2400, that usually the case with an older modem.

Actually, I never had problems connecting with CI$–I just wasn't paying any
attention, and didn't realize that I wasn't connecting at 2400 (which is the
max for my modem, except when it's in fax mode). The big problem was
connecting with a Mac. I managed connecting fine (after too many days of no
sccuess) with another modem that I have. Probably tomorrow night I'll test the
fax modem again, since Peter has to resend some of the picture files (the
original ones were too big for my computer to convert). I've jotted down the
initialization strings that you suggested, just in case. I guess one learns
from trying over and over and over again…
